Anybody into real vintage tube amps *beautiful pics*
Wow Ray, the only Les Paul I've ever seen was locked up in a glass trophy case in a guitar store years ago; my boyfriend at the time made solid body electric guitars, so we were constantly in guitar stores. Hang onto that!

They're leftovers from my days of conducting live concert broadcasts and recordings Pattye, given to me in lieu of payment for services rendered. I kept them for years and often told the original owner he could have them back for payment of the moneys owed and a portion of the storage.Purcy wrote:okay James, now what are you doing with 122's? Are they in good shape? What did they amplify??
Now they're a part of my retirement portfolio.
They were attached to matching Farfisas during their concert days.

Here is an mp3 I recorded yesterday. I missed a few notes while playing, but I guess it came out nice!

Pattye/rye, thanks for your kind words and encouragement! playing guitar is a really great way to unwind and pass time enjoyably.

Guys, all of you are going to make me cry...
seriously...
In a previous lifetime, I've been a musician, and a musical instruments store owner. Many moons ago, and 6000 miles away...I'm glad I haven't seen this thread before...
Stolen from my apartment during NATO bombings of '99:
- '72 Gibson LP Black Beauty Re-Issue
- '64 Fender Jazz Bass
- '71 Fender Tele Bass (modified, my main bass...BB's '54 P made me think of it...a lot)
- 80's G&L 2000 Bass
- 80's Warwick Streamer Bass (1st edition w/S. Duncan Active EQ PU's)
- '78 Ovation Glen Campbell 12-string
- '81 Ovation Custom Legend
The [censored] never touched my Ampeg SVT head, or the matching 2x15" cabinet. Those have later been traded for more essential stuff...
What has survived : a '67 Gibson SG Special and a Fender (circa '65) BlackFace Deluxe Reverb, that were loaned to a friend of mine at the time, along with a sack full of vintage pedals...unfortunately, my son from the first marriage decided to swap the SG for an Ibanez Steve Vai 7-string about two years ago..
Right now, all I have is an acoustic Ibanez that I barely have time to take out of gigbag, gifted to me by my wife on our first wedding anniversary...
To be continued...maybe...

George, I can't imagine the pain of losing all those instruments, be pretty devastating to say the least because everything you listed is a rare bird. Maybe through some weird miracle you'll get something back someday. There are some good samritans even in other parts of the world, hope you had some insurance or at least the serial numbers, pics, etc.
fortunately this person here that made this trade is apparently accessable, and needs to be beaten severely about the head. There's no way a Steve Vai guitar will ever will ever outvalue an SG, I owned a 59 SG for many years and like an idiot, (in the army with three kids) pawned it and lost it
.
Kristian, that's a beauty! Epiphones are extremely high quality, some epiphone models are more sought after than actual gibsons.

Old USA-built Epis, and even some Japanese ones play GREAT. You'll hear a lot of Epiphone Casinos (their version of Gibson ES330) on Beatles records, especially Help/Rubber soul era...just because of that, these babies command premium prices today...
Mike and Kristian, thanks for your kind words. Yes, I do have serials recorded, although I doubt that these will ever show up. I'm 95% certain that they've ended up in UK, since I believe I know who set me up...I know for a fact that my Tele Bass has been parted out....it was just way too recognizable...and no, there was no way of insuring them back then and over there...no insurance company in former Yugoslavia would insure a musical instrument for any decent amount of money...and let's not forget that inflation was 1000% a day for the most of the time in 1990's...
As for my son, he was 15 when he swapped the guitar, so I really don't blame him...I guess his mother encouraged him to do that since the amount of hate she has towards me-and anything that has to do with me-can't be described. Hell hath no fury....but I don't want to clog this thread with my messes...
The way I look at it, at least for the most part, is that I'm glad I'm alive and with all body parts in tact, unlike many of my friends back there...but there are days-not too many of them-when I read something like this thread, and get very down...then I have a scotch or two or seventeen, listen to Paul Kossoff and I'm back in the saddle again...
Thank you, my fellow ThinkPadders. Excellent people you are.
All the best.

Band of Gypsys happens to be my favourite Hendrix LP...and I'm NOT a Hendrix buff...enough said, Mike...?
Nicely done. You and Robin Trower must be twins separated at birth...
Speaking of exorbitant amounts...I'm old enough to remember when you could buy a '57 Les Paul for anywhere between $1,500 and 2,500 and it was a lot of money back then...but what has been going on over the last 10-12 years is a joke...and a bad one...
My first serious bass was a Precision back in '79...brand spankin' new, cost me 185 pounds, no VAT since it has been an export...it was pretty but a piece of *&^& like most of the post-74 Fenders...my opinion only...they got back on track somewhere in mid-80's...
Black Beauty Re-Issue that I've been referring to earlier in this thread cost me 500 pounds (about $800 at the time) in '87...it was bought at Chandler Guitars in London's Kew Gardens, probably one of (if not the) most exclusive/expensive stores over there...but I actually got a price break since no one wanted it at the time, it was just sooo not fashionable during the Kramer/Hamer/Jackson era...
But if you don't have it in your hand...you can spend all you want.
That being said, If I were considerably richer than I am, I wouldn't mind spending...on certain pieces...the collector in me is one seriously sick [censored]...let's just say that I've owned 7 D-series Citroens at one time in my life...at once...and a total of 28...
How about "Bridge Of Sighs" the next time around, Mike?

Thanks, I'm the better looking twin obviously
he's another hero of mine, I'll put together a collage of songs off the bridge of sighs album.
For me I've always been forced to buy the inexpensive guitars (not cheap just inexpensive) didn't like les pauls, because standing in a club for 4 - 5 hours with one of those on my shoulder used to make my arm go numb
. There seemed to be a time when no matter what model or manufacturer you bought from it was more "what country" it was made in during a certain time frame as to the overall quality. Some strats made in mexico in the $2K and up range years ago to me were junk, but ones made in Japan at much lower prices were unbelievable in quality. Right now my bullet is made in Mexico and the quality is as good as my Japanese made strat at 7X the cost. The one I wish I still had is that SG, didn't know what I had at the time, just knew I felt like Toni Iommi when playing Iron Man
My first guitar was an Epiphone acoustic that I worked over the summer and bought brand new for 140$, theres nothing like the smell of a brand new guitar
. I'm sure today it's worth a small fortune
. Oh well, the guitarss I have now are all good and play and feel like an extension of my arms and that's really what it's all about.
I actually had one of those electric guitars that had a solid aluminum neck....ever see one of those? It sucked major. No feeling in it, really weird.
Kristian, ............picking a different shirt next time

Mike,
The aluminum-neck guitar that you're referring to was originally known as Travis Bean, which has been sold to Kramer in the mid-70's. It came with DiMarzio pickups and Leo Quann Badass hardware...I've had a couple of these basses that sounded fine, but were impossible to play on stage since the balance of the weight once strapped was non-existent...
All the best.

It was definately a nice looking guitar, but nothing more than a novelty. Many years back we used to practice in my garage, and in the winter you'd go out there and pick the thing up and the neck was like ice and took forever to warm up so I had to make sure it stayed in the house. Another thing was you could not even think about doing a neck bend with it, (you know pressing the headstock while holding the body) that always amused me because I'd expect to get some slight bend sound but it stayed in absolute perfect tune
.
I think Ray has a few of those Hawaiian style shirts that you'd look great in!Kyocera wrote:Thanks, I'm the better looking twin obviouslyhe's another hero of mine, I'll put together a collage of songs off the bridge of sighs album.

Quality wise, I'm pleased with all my axes. My 2 acoustics are Corts from Korea and the finish is pretty good on both with the internal bracing, frets, inlays, etc. One of them had a problem with part of the bridge lifting a couple of years back, but got that glued back up by a luthier easily) The Epi's Chinese and the Tele's Indonesian, and I'm pretty satisfied with the quality of those (Tele however has a rather annoying issue with the input jack not staying within the body that I need to remedy, which I'll do when I eventually get a service for it).
At the moment I'd have to say that my guitar passion is overruling my TP passion
