home made thinkpad stand

#1 Post by jkahng » Sat Jun 09, 2007 9:40 am

take a look at this homemade thinkpad stand with an X60.
the person who made it is a member of ibmmania.com (korean thinkpad mania site)
it's hard to believe that this kind of quality and finish can be done diy.
it has a usb hub, 120mm led cooling fan and adjustable 36ways and made from aluminum coated with plastic.
enjoy...
John

that's pretty cool but how could they possibly type at that angle? Can you say Carpel Tunnel.

i guess the keyboard would be usable if the stand was laid flat. otherwise, time to fetch a ultranav usb... amazing quality though...

Wow. That's nice work. I even recognize the hub used. It's one of those available from those cheap chinese mailorder companies. It's only a few dollars.

Not for resale? I'd think IBM might take issue with that. ;)

It's still cool, but I notice they changed the usb hub and logo. Was the logo turned white for legal reasons? The hub plug/cable is also of the el cheapo variety (I have the same type of cable/plug on an aftermarket retractable Ipod sync cable). I don't know how long that will last.

DarkMark,
The X60 shown has standard coating to my knowledge.

Tholek,
The stand will come without the metallic IBM logo. And there are no plans to sell it else where or for profit. We only made 100 (limited to formum members) and they were soldout in about 3 days.
As for the quality of the USB hub cable, this can always be replaced if it goes bad...

very nice work..

the IBM Thinkpad logo can be used if you buy them from IBM or lenovo and hand one to each owner..

Can someone confirm? I didn't think X60 came with this sort of leathery covering?

Awesome work BTW...

DarkMark,
I didn't notice the leathery finish until now... It's a semi-permanant skin that can be purchased here(Korea). If you need sources I'll find out.

Thanks for the compliments everybody. I will relay them to the designer.

regards,
John
