Here's why (manual) sniping can backfire

#1 Post by rkawakami » Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:40 pm

So here I am waiting for time to pass until an eBay auction closes in 14 minutes. Got two tabs open; one that I've already entered a bid on and am waiting for the final confirmation, a second to refresh as time expires. I'm at work (actually doing work :) ) and I get drawn into a technical discussion about a test program I'm working on. More time passes while we hammer out a solution. 30 minutes later I realize I missed the end of the auction:

$15.50 (shipped!) for a 512MB PC133 module  :?

Knew I should have eSniped it....

Oh that hurts  I've never used eSnipe, but have gotten pretty good at slamming that bid in there with 10 seconds to go! But I have done that same thing, with having an ebay auction with a bid inserted on one Firefox tab and browsing on another tab (once on this forum) and forgot about the auction deadline and missed something for a song.

I was the one who won the auction. It's pure luck since I didn't use any sniper program. I simply entered my max. bid of $20 three hours before the auction ended and hope for the best(since I had to leave for work this afternoon). I really don't know why I won the auction but I do notice (from the photo) it looks like a PC-2100 sodimm. Anyway I guess I just have to wait until it arrives.

I hope this is not another bad eBay purchase/experience of mine. Recently I did make some very aweful purchases I don't even want to talk about.

teetee...I think you are right...that looks like a pc2100/2700 stick and not a PC133 stick...the gap is too far to one side...

Hopefully, it was a stock photo....

You know, you two are right. I didn't look closely at the spacing of the "key" on the module, but it's too close to the end to be an SDRAM PC133. Hope you either get the "real McCoy" or your money back.

$15.50 shipped is still fairly nice for a 512 MB DDR stick...

(and "133 MHz" could mean both PC-133 and PC-2100, which runs at 2*133 MHz - so I don't see why he would give a refund anyway.)

That's so observant of you! Perhaps the seller used the wrong photo?

For your sake I hope it's what you need...

As for sniping, I've got a T23 (I think) that I'm looking at (not too seriously, but at $110 Australian with a little bit less than 3 hrs to go it could be a great bargain), so there is no way I shall be distracted

A friend of mine just picked up two T30s for $95 each...without a sniping tool. He bought the first one in working order, and the second needs a new backlight, which is no problem for him...
