Recent decrease in spam

#1 Post by rkawakami » Thu Jun 14, 2007 7:02 pm

Has anybody else noticed a fall-off in the amount of spam within the last couple of days? I have usually been getting a couple of hundred spams to my Yahoo account each day for the last month or two. Given the 40 or so that have appeared in the last 16 hours, I'd say that's a significant decrease. Remebering that there was some news about a prolific spammer recently I Googled and found this:

Hard to say. Since I have grey-listing and SpamAssassin, I don't get much anyway, but the little that gets trapped by SpamAssassin has fallen off lately. ... JDH

Yeah, I've noticed that too. 8)

Robert Soloway in Seattle. That's the guy referenced in the link I posted earlier. If my Yahoo "bulk" folder is any indication, at least MY address seems to have been taken offline by his present legal troubles.

Oddly, my Yahoo account has started receiving very large amount of spam lately in the past couple of weeks. Even those mails which were going to the Bulk mail folder has found a way into my mail box.

I run both of those for our web site, but I still get 50+ spam per day, most of which Thunderbird catches. The downside of having had the same email address for over 10 years, and visible on Usenet etc ...

@Bill - greylisting should not affect you or the forum. Since your addresses are real and traceable, greylisting should have no impact. At least that is the theory and how it works at my ISP.

@Tom - I have a very well refined user_prefs file to trap almost everything greylisting does not. My email address goes back to 1996, so it attracts a lot of spam as well.

I average about 1 or 2 per month with the current arrangement.

And some do not check their emails for more than 3 months and soon their accounts will get deactivated automatically so it becomes a problem for you to contact them, as deactivated email accounts will bounce all emails back to the sender; and hence this will largely contribute in the amount of junk mails received everyday.

My Gmail account reached a peak equilibrium of about 3000 spam messages in the spam folder, but in recent weeks the # of incoming spams has fallen sharply while the # of spams autodeleted by Gmail has remained steady.

I'm down to about 1200 spams and falling...

Looks like June is coming in at 5 per day trapped in SpamAssassin whereas May and earlier was 10 per day (trapped). So there has be a definite decrease. ... JDH

I haven't noticed any decrease in spam. I still get about 300 - 400 per day.
