In-Thread Picture Warnings - Why?
I'm just curious as to why there must be warnings in thread titles if there are to be pictures in threads.

Also it gives a heads up to those fellow members accessing this forum from workplace. Pictures can get illusive sometimes...

Even better - follow the Rules of the Road, and don't post anything that's NSFW...frankiepankie wrote:Maybe it is handy to use the tags:

Seeing as how both the main forum list and any given thread without embedded images weights 140-150 kilobytes (40-50 kB for HTML, 100 kB for images*), I don't think another 50 kB image is that major of a concern.skitty4gzus wrote:it also gives a heads up to foks surfing from pda's or other portable browsers because at their connection it would really be slow loading.
* Worst offender: drive caddys ad, 35 kB (this could easily be shaved to 10 kB or less). Not so bad: parrot picture, 17 kB; happy rainbow logo, 16 kB; laptopguy ad, 10 kB; NOD32 ad, 8 kB. Respectably sized: ecoupons and logicbuy ads, both only 3 kB.

Good point on the header image sizes (though those only get loaded once) -- we'll have to replace DriveCaddys one with a smaller one.
But while a single 50 KB image might not make a huge difference, 10 of them would -- as would a single 500 KB (or larger) image. The "no images" rule is simple and easy to understand. And I think not too onerous in the end ...

I've become a great advocate of the small thumbnail style links to images hosted via Imageshack (this is what I often use when I have pics to show. Also, I don't mind clicking on a link to a picture on another site instead of having the picture in the thread where it can affect the width of the page (if there are going to be pics embedded in a post, it would be prudent for members to consider reducing them to 800 x 600 or 640 x 480 before uploading). I have a fairly slow broadband connection, so big pics in the posts can be a bit cumbersome to wait for.

Personally, I am in agreement with your points, KristianJ. I am also a fan of thumbnail style links.
80% of the time I spend browsing this forum it is on a cellular connection. Only recently has the speed improved somewhat. However I find that as more people begin to use the technology, the speed slows down again. On cellular connections at least, images are the most problematic. Even the little icons strewn throughout most every webpage cause my browser to often go into a holding pattern. I believe what it is, is the browser calling for a fetch of each web page link (as the icons are basically little links). It is this constant fetching that slows down the page loading to a great degree. File downloads are quite fast, and streaming data works pretty good (videos and internet radio). It is web page loading that is the least helped by the new, faster technology.
So to sum up, my HSDPA 3G cellular connection cannot hold a candle to the slow 700 MBS ADSL connection that I sometimes can use. Even with ADSL at 700 MBS, web browsing is a much more pleasing experience than with my cellular connection as a rule. There are some exceptions. It seems when I have a good 3G signal in an area with a low population, at the right time of day, web browsing does go quite fast with my cellular connection. Unfortunately, this is the exception, rather than the rule.

There are some overseas users who do not have access to high speed at home or at work--it just don't exist! So the 'no image' policy helps heaps.Tholek wrote:I'm not asking the policy be changed, but is the reason for it still an issue in these days of broadband and wi-fi? I doubt many here still use dialup to access the forums, but I could be wrong.

Not necessarily. When I'm not in a 3G area (ie Rural or antiquated areasTholek wrote:I didn't think about cellular.
Then again, those speeds have surpassed 56k, haven't they?
TBH on those settings it's probably worthwhile to disable images in the actual browser....
But the system that TPTB/Da Mods use here is perfectly acceptable. It's probably easier just to post the tags with URL rather than IMG tags anyway
