What's on your desk top (the real one)? (PIC)

I noticed that my real desk top almost mimics my computer desktop ... I have the following items:

1. T60 (My Computer)
2. External HDD (Removable Storage)
3. A folder full of papers (My documents)
4. My ipod (Music player/My Music)
5. Used plate with a paper napkin (Recycle bin)
6. Clock (time on windows taskbar)
7. Newspaper (Internet browser)
8. Some random mail (e mail client)
9. A couple of books (pdfs!)

Is the computer desktop a metaphor of a real life desk? Or have I been using windows for too long?

My desk has too much stuff on it I shall make a list that includes the things that are always on the desk

- My T42 and Port Replicator II
- 320GB external 3.5" hard drive
- 40GB and 30GB external 2.5" hard drive
- "Soothing sands" framed novelty gift
- Blank CDs and DVDs
- An upturned DVD spindle cover filled with loose change
- External DVD burner
- Desk lamp
- Gumball machine
- HP PSC 1315 multifunction centre
- Pen/pencil holder with pens and pencils
- Glass guitar slide
- Clock
- AA battery charger

I also have a couple of puzzles and other odds and ends scattered all over the place, plus about 150 CDs within the built in CD holder on the desk and the several CD racks on top of it.

No, all music CDs...my software I keep elsewhere (be it in another room with my parents' PC, the cylindrical case that's on the shelf below the keyboard tray, my wardrobe, or elsewhere). And the keyboard is just a simple Labtec wireless one; it has a mouse as well, although it's not all that precise, hence the Microsoft optical one.

Okay, let's see... To my left an HP Business Inkjet 1100d ("d" for duplexer). In front, an old broken gooseneck lamp used by my cockatiel as his perch when he's in with me. Below that is a Gateway docking station for my 450SX. In front of the dock is an Antec cooling pad (Gateway runs real hot). On top of the pad is one of any number of Thinkpads. Usually it's the daily driver HNU. To the right, from the bottom up, is a Sun Ultra 5, Seagate STD624000N tape and Yamaha CDRW external drives for the Sun. On top of those is a printer stand and on THAT is an HP LaserJet 5L. Further to the right is a Luxo lamp (two tube model, not the round one) that's clamped on to the back of the desk. Next to that is a cradle for my Palm Zire and a 120G NetDisk drive. Completing the electronics on the desk is the stack of networking gear: Netgear RT314 router, Netgear PS110 print server, Westell Wirespeed DSL modem and Netgear FS608 8-port switch. I'm not going to describe the rest of the stuff (read: junk) on the desk, nor take a picture of it in this state.

That's the computing desk. Turning to my right is the main L-shaped desk which contains a collection of CDs, a couple of Vertex VX10 radios, a Yaesu VX5R radio, more junk, a GE 2-line phone, more CDs, a clock radio and then the Gateway tower setup. Under the desk is a full-tower Gateway Performance 600 loaded with CD/DVD and CDRW drives. There's also a removable hard drive bay for system backups and extra storage. On top of the desk is a Sharp 16" LCD atop an NTI ST-2U KVM (for the Gateway and Sun). In front of the Sharp is an A/T/R/X port replicator. This is the main work area for laptop repairs. The T and A systems (oohh.. that's doesn't sound right...) The A3x and T2x systems plug into the port replicator, which is already wired with power, ethernet and serial and parallel loopback plugs. To the right of the Sharp is the Epson 1240U scanner. Usually there's also a cat (or two) next to the scanner but they're off somewhere else in the house (probably sleeping on my side of the bed). Below the right end of the desk is a decommissioned home-built 486DX4 tower and (currently) 28 Thinkpads in various condition. Oh, almost forgot about the Sun Ultra 10 that's under there too. Another project that I haven't had time to work on... A set of shelves and storage areas sits on the desk (what is that called? Can't think of the word right now...) On top of that is the Netgear ME102 AP (highest point in the room). In the storage areas is my collection of multimeters (three) assembled over the years, books, software, memory modules, more books and software, spare parts for the Thinkpads (memory, hard drives, caddies, HSF assemblies, etc.), and a collection of Ultrabay devices (optical, floppy, and HD adapters).

My real desk is 5.5 feet long and 30 inches deep. It has a Scanner, printer, monitor for the tower IBM PC (speakers behind the monitor), pile of household papers, and telephone along the back half. Two piles of work papers, keyboard, mouse, and T41 along the front half.

No room to work, even though 30 x 66 inches is a big as many desks. So I turn the chair around an work on the kitchen table

My computer desktops are much, much, much neater than real life.

My work area is rather simple since I do not like clutter. I have a 4' wide computer work desk that I built myself.
- the trusty T22
-a crappy Lexmark x2250 printer/scanner where the printer broke but the scanner works great
-a great HP Deskjet 3915 printer that I won brand new on ebay for $11
-my DSL modem/router/AP
-a set of stereo computer speakers
-a framed photo of DH and I
-my Dell Axim syncing cradle and
-my Kyocera keyboard/screen duster

of course since one of my cats always sits next to me in my office, I have his food bowls next to my desk. Now DH's office is in our basement and trust me, it isn't neat at all

That looks very nice despite the few flaws! Is it just a fibreboard or laminate with the "faux" woodgrain finish? I'm looking for something that has doors so I can hide most of the mess I have in the lower side shelves.

Thanks! I guess it is just pressed laminate with a false finish, but hey, you can't beat the price! It has enough draws and a big enough work surface for me, I am happy with it.

I actually have a steelcase desk at work, that is really awesome .. .too bad they run into hundreds of dollars.

This is what I got for the family computer desk. I took to door off of the PC compartment (below the Slide-out keyboard tray) for better access and cooling. Overall, I am quite happy with it. I didn't want to spend a fortune, but I didn't want particle board either.

As far as what is on it, I have a Viewsonic 17" G71f+SB graphics CRT monitor, with Monsoon Planar Media level 9 Ribbon Transducer speakers on each side (with included subwoofer on a shelf at the back where the chair slides in). I have a Canon PIXMA MP600 color printer/scanner to the right of the monitor. There is a Palm Tungsten T3 hotsync and charging cradle between the monitor and the printer. On top of the hutch I have a Netgear FWG114P ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Router with USB Print Server, and on the shelf above the monitor I have a ZyXEL DSL modem. On top of the PC itself I have a cheap Inland memory card reader.

That looks great!! Eventually when I get my own home I want a nice solid timber desk like that...the small size of my bedroom means that I'm limited in the "footprint" of my desk, and the desk I have now is pretty much a hand me down from my parents' retreat and study. I've been inspired to keep my eye out for a good bargain though.
