Is this a deal?

#1 Post by The Spirit of X21 » Tue Jul 31, 2007 2:53 am

I've been looking at desktop systems from (gasp!) Dell. Does this seem like a good deal (I have a monitor)?

It's probably not as fast as the new Core 2 Duo stuff, but for use as a server I thought it would be ideal. Thoughts?

Well it is pretty barebone...

The CPU is worth around $60 these days.
An AM2 motherboard with 6150 LE is probably around $50.
512 MB of DDR, maybe $20.
80 GB hard drive can probably be bought for $50.
DVD-ROM is $20.
Okay-looking case with somewhat-quiet power supply would be $40 at least.

So the parts themselves would cost you around $240. Is your time spent not researching these parts, ordering, assembling, and potentially troubleshooting worth $50?

Do you have other components you could reuse like DDR2 or an optical drive?

What kind of server are we talking about? 512 MB of RAM would be low for a lot of servers... but if you are going to upgrade, do so aftermarket, Dell's prices are outrageous.

At the moment, my desktop is working as my server. It's an eMac G4 800MHz with a 320GB hard drive and 1GB RAM. It works fine for what I do, even though it is close to five years old. I was looking at a desktop machine for linux/server/whatever, and these barebone systems seemed like nice places to start that could be upgraded as I needed more RAM/hard drive space/etc.

Hey Chris, would you be interested in buying my Dimension B110 desktop?

EDIT: It's probably better if we discuss via email. I'll email you in a little bit.

Chris, if you are not installing Windows, this $279 + shipping Dimension E520 N is worth considering. I think you can upgrade the HDD to 160GB and qualify for free shipping.

BTW, I decided not to sell B110. It's good enough for what I do, and I probably would be able to get more than $200 for it, so I'd rather just hold on to it.

No worries. Dell has daily specials, and I'm sure I'll find something I like. Perhaps this one (Ah! it expires today!):

The black case would look very nice with my T40.
