The logo issue on new ThinkPads

#1 Post by Growly » Mon Aug 06, 2007 4:45 am

I know this has been done to death, and if there's a definitive thread someone please - please - please - someone link me.

I also know that over in the U.S. many people have been getting T61s with the old IBM logo. Garry was one (you lucky #$#@%!!!).

However, down in NZ, Lenovo Australia is quick to point out that they're phasing out the old logo entirely. They can't even hint at the possibility of not getting the new one. In fact, they repeatedly deny any 4:3 version of the T61p ever coming...

So have decided that it's easy to replace said logo?

Are there any replacement palm rests? Hehehehe.

I know it's pathetic, but I want this for the IBM - not for the Lenovo. It's a childhood thing.

It already pains me enough that I can't get the traditional square design...

(Thanks for all the first hand advice guys - I'd hug you all if I could. They just don't let you get a hold of these before you can decide it seems - here at least.)

New Palmrest?
You just peel off the old sticker by the help of an xacto knife in one of the corners.
Then you buy the IBM logos from ebay, which are completely identical to the ones on the IBM palmrest, actually they're a replacement "part".

See http://shop.ebay.com/ibm-thinkpad-stick ... Q20sticker

So it's potentially possible to not notice a difference? Depending on my own handy work of course.

You sir, are a winnar.

hmmm. You know what would look even better?

No logo at all :D

Has anyone gone so far as to fill in the indentation with some bondo and paint it?

If I could get the texture/feel right (on the palmrest) I would totally do it.

The logo on top of the laptop though.. now that wouldn't be too bad at all.. it would be an excuse to get my T42 powdercoated a darker black mmmm

This thread gave me an excellent idea which I just now executed (took me less than 5 minutes overall).

I have a T42 with the IBM Thinkpad stickers, and at work they gave me a T60 with the Thinkpad-T stickers.

Now, both stickers look cool to me, but I didn't like the fact that my computers look different.

So I took one sticker from the T60 and put it on the T42, and I took one sticker from the T42 and put it on the T60.

So now I have two Thinkpads, with a "Thinkpad-T" sticker on the outside, and an "IBM Thinkpad" sticker on the palmrest.

I feel like such a geek.

Most definitely. However, I do wish there were a blank palmrest, but to remove the trackpad and buttons. I'm a trackpoint user from way back and want to break this [censored] touchpad habit again.
