Brother MFC 7820N over network w Netgear Router WRG614? How?
Brother MFC 7820N over network w Netgear Router WRG614? How?
I went through the whole Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and even though it says everythings good it wont PRINT.
At this point my ROUTER is DHCP and so is the Printer.
Would someone recommend using a Static IP for the printer?
Do I need to open / activate certain ports / services in the NETGEAR router for this to work?
PS: I cant remember where but somewhere before the purchase I noticed that someone had mentioned that the SOP did not work and they had found a work around etc.

I don't know if your printer is similar to mine or not, but the following is how I set up my Canon MP600 USB Multifunction Printer to work with my Netgear router with print server.
1. Install the printer drivers according to manufacturer's instructions.
2. Start Add Printer Wizard
3. Click Next
4. Choose Local printer attached to this computer, make sure box to Automatically detect is unchecked, and choose Next
5. Choose Create a new port
6. Choose Type of port: as Standard TCP/IP Port and choose Next
7. Click Next
8. Enter 192.168.0.1 for Printer Name or IP Address - Port Name: should be IP_192.168.0.1 (192.18.0.1 is the default gateway for my Netgear router)
9. Click Next
10. For Device Type, should be Standard, Generic Network Card
11. Click Next
12. Click Finish
13. Complete wizard by choosing appropriate printer and driver
14. Give printer a new name if necessary - I chose Networked Canon MP600 Printer
15. Once printer is installed, right-click on printer and choose Properties
16. Choose Ports tab
17. Choose Configure Port... for the Standard TCP/IP port you just added
18. I don't think this step is necessary, but I changed the Port Number to 515
19. Change Protocol to LPR
20. Under LPR Settings, for Queue Name: type in LPT1 and click on OK, then OK
This is what worked for me.

I got the same problem:Brother MFC420CN, and netgear wireless router(the printer is connected to router with ethernet cable, my T60 uses wireless connection).
I installed all printer's software, but still no printer found through network. With Adobe I tried to scan a paper, it worked like a charm(that means network works, right?), then, I modified a little with the scanned image, and tried to print out, but didn't work out because no printer found there.

I figured this problem out after a lot of pain.
Note - It is possible to install the printer the way the MOD has suggested i.e. by setting it up as a TCP/IP port but then it becomes a Generic Printer of sorts not the Printer/ Scanner / Fax that you bought.
What the printer software does by default is ASSIGN a NAME to the Printer and addresses it by name through the LAN on your Router network.
The funny thing is even PING does not work within the LAN because by default routers block it.
Now computer you use to install the software will by default address the printer by NAME... The problem happens when DHCP assigns a new IP to the printer and BOOM your addressing by NAME does not work.
So what do you need to do after you have installed all the software as per the Standard Operating Procedure from the CD / Brother Drivers?
- Set up a Static IP on your LAN / within your Router for the MFC 7820N (ROUTER SETUP)
- On the Printer Menus there is an area where you can set it up to use a Static IP as well - Enter the same Static IP in there (PRINTER SETUP)
- On the machine (with software installed) look for the PRINTER that has been added for the MFC 7820B. Go to PRINTER > PROPERTIES > PORTS > CONFIGURE PORT
In the dialog that comes up the Printer Name or IP Address is where you will find the following Port Settings or something similar.
Port Settings
Port Name: BRN_7EDAEA
Printer Name or IP Address: BRN_7EDAEA
Here instead of the Printer Name you have to add the Static IP Address you have used in the ROUTER & PRINTER SETUPs. This is the MACHINE SETUP.
So now that all of the following use the same Static IP the printer should start working. Ofcourse, you might have to restart all the devices in case they need that to apply the updated settings.
Now there is one element left.
SCANNER SETUP:
You have to do the same Name replace by IP in the following place:
Control Panel > Scanners & Cameras > Brother MFC-7820N LAN > Properties > Network Setting
Change the option to: Specify your machine by Address: and use the same IP Address.
From now on you should be ready to rock and roll.
Whats funny is despite having spent YEARS in the IT world.. networking, hacking, security, enterprise systems, supply chain.. this was something I had not done in AGES (setup a network printer) so it was a pain the made me go back the basics.
