T40 "Christian Edition" ~ MUST SEE :)
Oh dear God.
So he hacks the boot screen, installs some pirated software and slaps a sticker on the outside. Then charges $300 more than what the going rate is.
Praise be.
NOTE: I am a Christian and I find this auction offensive to say the least.
Windows XP Jesus Edition.
Wow. Just wow.

Sweet mother of mercy.....
The photo in the top left is from Ars Technica's review of the T40 (December 15, 2003). The rest is just crap photoshopped onto some kind of Dell from the looks of it.
"Windows XP Jesus Edition"..? Oy..... Does it crash if you sin?
I initially figured that it might have had Ubuntu Christian Edition. This is just sad...

when the muslim edition comes out i think it would be prudent to run like hell if you actually see it in person..
BEFORE it martyrs itself and explodes..
which i think leads to a question..
would it still be covered under a damage warranty..?
oops, i better withdraw that..
might have a fatwah declared on me..

If you treat it nice, then it'll work fine. But if you try to take away its RAM, or install spyware on it, tell it what it can and cannot run, and stomp on it, then yeah it might do nasty things.BillMorrow wrote:when the muslim edition comes out i think it would be prudent to run like hell if you actually see it in person..

A number of years back I read an article in the NY Times that has stuck with me. It was about the arrest of a "Cult Leader" who had bilked several people of their life savings. Seems he insisted that to be a member of his cult you had to sell all your worldy posessions and hand the money over to him.
That's not in itself so unusual and might not even be illegal. But the kicker was that his cult was based on the belief that his dog was the reincarnation of Jesus' dog.
Yes - he convinced several people to sell everything and hand him the money on the strength of that story.
That was when I realized that there is nothing so stupid that someone, somewhere, won't swallow it whole. And the best scams usually involves religion in some form or another. I guess if you're a scammer looking for gullible victims, a bunch of folks who believe in an invisible man in the sky is a good place to start.

Im a Christian also, i dont really find it that "offensive." He or she can sell it at whatever price they wish. As far as the Jesus edition, it is pretty corny and on the surface it seems like the laptop for the ultra-spiritually minded folks out there. To me I dont need pictures of Jesus on every square inch of my laptop to remind me of how much I care about Him. That is borderline religiousity in my mind. @egibbs- have you ever been in a plane? i have never seen Jesus at 40k feet have you?
My New Baby! T42p 2373-HVU
I thought I saw him in a potato chip once, but it turned out to be John the Baptist so I ate it. I know people who swear they saw him in an oil stain. And the Virgin Mary keeps popping up in grilled cheese sandwiches and dirty windows - lately she's been on TV more than Paris Hilton.skitty4gzus wrote:@egibbs- have you ever been in a plane? i have never seen Jesus at 40k feet have you?
Don't take offense skitty - there are many flavors of assorted nuts, and only some are religious. Nor is everyone who is deeply religious a gullible fool - I'm sure you are not. But the hucksters do seem to love to prey on God's little children, don't they?
Given the ridiculous price the ebayer was asking (and got!) for this ancient T40, I think he is squarely in the huckster category. Whether there is anything wrong with fleecing the flock is a question we each have to answer for ourselves, but I think he's already found his personal answer.

When I first saw this post I thought it was kind of funny, not very serious, I still think that. Someone was drawn to the Jesus'd up computer, probably someone who could not otherwise successfully make those changes to the OS and bios screens. They just paid extra for a customized machine, really nothing more.
It does seem a bit overzealous yes. I don't know if the seller or buyer had any realisation of the true value of the T40 (with or without these gimmicky mods), but if both parties end up being satisfied with the transaction who are we to "argue"? The only "Christian" aspect of my T42 is my Bible software package.skitty4gzus wrote:Im a Christian also, i dont really find it that "offensive." He or she can sell it at whatever price they wish. Hmmm
Well, I'm a militant atheist ("Tax Churches, Not People").
But this seems harmless, if a bit silly. Normal folks might choose a screensaver or desktop background that suits their personality. Others go to greater lengths to have their Thinkpads painted or otherwise customized. I'd guess there's a market for this kind of stuff, so more power to the guy. (If I were given the unit, it would be purified before being allowed in the house!)
Hey, as long as we're on the Christian theme:
I used to do software support for the Burroughs B1000 line of minicomputers, which were big boxes about six feet high, as per small computers in the 70s. They were typically industrial gray boxes, like computers oughta look. I was sent to the Thomas Nelson Bible Company somewhere in the southeast (Tennessee?) to assist with a problem with their computer. I walked into their computer room and almost dropped my jaw: they'd flocked the entire machine in a beautiful maroon velvet-like finish, just like a traditional bible cover! Absolutely magnificent!

wow cool
I am a 'militant' Baptist Christian; tax atheist not churches, atheists have not one to pray to for help.
I think it is very nice. One has a choice of three different covers for the back. The fish on bootup is a very nice touch. I like the idea of the Christian oriented software.

Unfortunately, sleeper cells are already among us. If you look carefully though, you can identify them...they say "SONY." (sorry, couldn't resist...)BillMorrow wrote:when the muslim edition comes out i think it would be prudent to run like hell if you actually see it in person..
