Compal includes laptop lid cooling

#1 Post by anthean » Fri Sep 21, 2007 6:17 pm

From the Inquirer:
Compal, as you can see above, has a much better solution. The heatpipe pulls the energy off, and that is routed through the hinge and on to a big aluminum or carbon plate that backs the screen. The lid looks like any other, just a normal laptop, and under full load, feels a little warmer.

The big trick here is the hinge, you need something that works like a normal hinge, transfers heat and is totally reliable. This is not a minor engineering challenge, but Compal claims to have done it.
I think this is a fantastic concept which will allow notebooks to be cooled without blowing potentially dusty or humid air through sensitive interval spaces, and also reduce power draw and extend battery life by eliminating fans.

Moderators: I have included this here as Compal is the current T-series manufacturer, but if this is better moved to off topic, please feel free to do so.

Very impressive. Has Lenovo done anything similar?

Is That Really True?

Is Compal really the manufacturer for Lenovo T Series?

I've always thought of them as a low-end OEM for the bottom end of various manufacturers' product lines.

I though Lenovo made the T series for IBM then bought the laptop and desktop business from them.

Hm. I could be wrong, of course, and if I am, I apologize. And I agree, I was somewhat surprised by the choice of Compal.

But I do remember this article Compal Wins Orders From NEC & Lenovo

That said, I still think this is a nifty idea, if indeed it can be durably manufactured.

Seems like a good idea, though I was wondering something about this quote:
The big trick here is the hinge, you need something that works like a normal hinge, transfers heat and is totally reliable
I don't really know if they use the whole bottom of the screen as a hinge to transfer the heat, but what about having normal hinges and inbetween add "fake hinges" which transfer the heat?
