Like I said in another thread earlier today, I just got an HP nc2400 yesterday and am very pleased with the purchase. For those of you not happy with the X series' 1024x768 resolution and/or its lack of an internal optical drive, you should seriously consider getting the HP nc2400. This is the first HP laptop I've ever used/owned (though I had two crappy Compaqs before), and it feels as solid as any of the X-series Thinkpads I've owned (X60s, X41 tablet, two X40's, two X22's, X21, and three X20's). Because it's a widescreen laptop, the keyboard is wider than the X series' and is about as wide as my R50p's keyboard, so the keys are slightly bigger and I find it easier to type on this machine. But the machine is still narrow enough (11.1" in width) so it would easily fit into a small bag. I also like the ultra smooth palmrest, which makes my wrists happy. The sandpaper-like palmrests of the Thinkpads have always bothered me. I've seen people complain about how slow the nc2400 is, because of its 1.8" 4200rpm HDD, but to me WinXP Pro feels at least as snappy as and possibly faster than it does on an X40 or X41.
I do miss the X series' built-in microphone and scroll button though. I am also somewhat disappointed that this unit weighs much more than HP's measurement. It currently has a 9-cell battery and weighs 3.88 lbs, and I plan to replace it with a 3-cell one. But even with a 3-cell battery, the unit should still weigh around 3.2 lbs, which is nowhere near HP's published weight of 2.8 lbs. Of course, 3.2 lbs is still highly portable.
I will keep this nc2400 for a while.
UPDATE: I got the 3-cell battery, bringing the laptop's weight down to 3.16 lbs! I love it even more now!
UPDATE #2: After removing the optical drive, the laptop weighs 2.81 lbs. So, it seems that hP's measurement really was made from a unit without the optical drive.
UPDATE #3: So I brought this HP with me to a 5-day conference in San Diego CA, and used it on battery several times. Even though the battery only has 3 cells, it lasted close to 3 hours. The 8-cell battery would probably last 7 hours. Having 1280 pixel columns proved to be VERY HELPFUL when I had to work on two documents side by side during this trip. Trying to do the same with the Thinkpad X series's 1024 columns would have been frustrating.
UPDATE #4: I ran the PCMark2002 benchmarking software. The HP nc2400 beats the X40 Thinkpad in all three categories: CPU, RAM and hard drive.
UPDATE #5: I just found
this document which says:
• Extremely mobile with a starting weight of 2.8 lbs (1.29kg) and only 0.97” (24.8mm) thin, you can work just about anywhere.
• Can be configured with an optical drive for enhanced productivity or without for extreme mobility.
I think this confirms that the 2.8-lb weight is indeed for a configuration without an optical drive.
