Zip and LS-120 disks

#1 Post by jruschme » Fri Oct 19, 2007 8:51 am

I'm curious... is anyone still using Zip and/or LS-120 disks anymore?

Yesterday, I had a coworker gift me with a quantity of unopened LS-120 Superdisks (30-40), Zip 100's (9), Zip 250's (38), and Zip 750's (8). At this point, I think I have more unused Zip disks than any sane person should have in 2007... and I don't even own a Zip 750!

So, as I said, is anyone still using the older removable drives and, if so, for what?

Also, anybody need any Zip/LS-120 disks? :-)

I have about 30 Zip 250 disks and the drive still works perfectly. I don't use 'em much myself (I have a REV drive now), but my girlfriend uses the Zip drive on her ThinkPad for backups. I also use it occasionally for transferring large files from computer to computer, because I've never been able to get my home network to allow file sharing among computers.

The great thing about zip and REV drives is the removable disks allow for easy off-site backup. We can go away for the weekend and leave our teenager here knowing that even if she burns down the house (a distinct possibility with her) I won't lose any data.

I still use an LS-120 drive with my 701C via the PCMCIA port. Its a heck of a lot faster than using untold numbers of 1.44MB floppies! With the 701C you don't have many other options, plus it's almost the same size as the regular floppy drive. I have just one disk, but thats all I need considering how I hardly ever use the little guy.

I used to have SCSI Zip100s in my PCs, using SCSI motherboards.
After I bought a mobo without SCSI, I got a separate SCSI PCI-card, for use with my SCSI scanner, which is a rare item nowadays (Agfa 1236s).
I gave up using Zips and use my home network instead to save files onto another PC.
I gave my 2 SCSI Zip drives away, when I got a free IDE-Zip100.
I have about 20 Zip-disks still lying around, but they have not been used in a very long time.
External USB-harddisks are so cheap nowadays...

I had an NEC desktop when I was a young warthog, with a superdisk drive. I'm almost certain I was the only person in the state who ever purchased those disks from Staples.

I used to use ZIP disks to move large files from one computer to another. Now I use CF cards... they hold more and are faster.

I do think there's still a place for the parallel port ZIP. Since it has DOS drivers, it allows you to get files in or out of your computer just using a DOS boot diskette. I did this once when I had a desktop computer whose hard drive was dying. It wouldn't boot into Windows, but it would boot from a DOS diskette. Once I loaded the DOS ZIP drivers, I was able to copy off the files I needed onto the ZIP disks simply using DOS commands.

I have Zip250s with drives in both my desktop as well as ThinkPad UB2K that I rarely use. I also have UB2K Superdisk 120s that we do use occassionally for archives since my wife has being using those since she worked for a consulting firm that issued her 600e with a Superdisk drive.
