Can Your ThinkPad Run That Game?

#1 Post by Roadster » Sun Dec 09, 2007 3:44 pm

FYI only.

Check out the following free link from System Requirements Lab if you are interested in determining if a particular video game will run on your system.

http://www.srtest.com/referrer/srtest

This is a free service that looks at your computer's hardware and system software to determine whether or not your current system can run a product. Each of your computer's components is evaluated to see how well it meets the minimum and recommended requirements for specific products.

The website will have to download a very small ActiveX/Java browser component on your system in order to analyze the hardware, but it is harmless.

* No personally identifiable information is collected.
* Only your system's hardware and system software are evaluated.
* Works on Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, 2003, Media Center, Vista.
* Works with Internet Explorer, Firefox & Netscape browsers.
* Suggestions provided for improving your computer.
* You will need to give your permission to download a secure ActiveX/Java browser component.
* You can easily uninstall the ActiveX/Java browser component when the analysis is complete.

I have no vested interest in this company. I just ran across this link several weeks ago on the GameSpot website, of which I am an active member, and I have been using it as a bookmarked link ever since. I have also tested the results on a few games and downloaded demos, and I can personally attest to the accuracy of the results.

Hope you find this information useful. :)

All it does is to look up the minimum and recommended components and then compare those with your system. You could just as easily look at the back of the box that your game came in.

Good for you. So don't use it.

I could also grow my own vegetables, churn my own butter, and walk to work every day, but sometimes I choose to do things the easy way... especially when it's free. ;)

What I'm trying to say is that it would be really neat if there were a utility that actually runs a game demo, measures fps, and then tells you if you can play the game in question or not- like 3DMark but online.

I hear you. But this is still helpful for a lot of people that just want to know if a game will run on their system without having to investigate whether their video graphics card or chip is greater than or less than the "nVidia 8xxx" specified on the side of a game box.

Unfortunately, the very day that I posted this link, the site shut down... hopefully this is only a temporary set-back, because I'm thinking about buying Call of Duty 2, and I'm interested in seeing how it will run on my machine. (I don't think COD4 will work very well, but COD2 probably has a good shot at success.)

I have a new 'CoD, United Offensive' 2 CD expansion pack sitting here, incl. manual and CD-key. It's been opened but never installed.
I don't have the 'main' program for it, so it's no good to me.
I'll mail it to you for a tenner. If interested PM me.

Thanks for the offer, Ron, but I understand you need COD 1 to run that expansion pack, and I don't have that. I'm thinking about buying COD 2. But I appreciate the thought anyway. Cheers!

I'll be [censored] if I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars on a video card so I can play bioshock.

Sorry, just not worth it..... *sigh*

It is a possibility, but I need Vertex Shader 3.0, and I have 1.1. And I need Pixel Shader 3.0, and i have 1.3. I've heard of emulators, but they drain processor power....
