thank you for your responses everyone, you've been of tremendous help.
i will take your advice JD and get a router when im backn in the states for the summer. router seems to be the simplest solution as i won't have to attach anything to my thinkpads. but for now i will try subversion to see if i can get that going.

When I'm connecting to a wireless network I always see an option for Ad-hoc (I think) It's what porable systems like a DS or PSP use, and you can connect both laptops with it, and get decent speed throug the wireless cards, there may even be an option to add a WEP or something, but now I'm just guessing....
