Do You like winter?

#1 Post by dietpepsiaddict » Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:40 pm

I am really not a big fan of "Old man Winter" Up here in Wasaga Beach we have had a "Winter Storm Warning" in effect By Environment Canada. Supposed to get freezing rain tonight! ( it never ends!)

What is your opinion? Thanks for the votes! :D

Maybe I am a lil' crazy ... I love winter (I always have). But again, I live in Florida  I have been yearning to see snow ever since I was a kid (am from a very hot town in south india), and I still haven't. I hope to set that record straight this winter.

Now that I am retired and have a garage and driving my four wheel drive truck in the the snow is optional, yes, winter is sort of fun now.

Here in Missouri we sometimes get lightning & thunder with the snow and that's entertaining!

well here in michigan we are going for the record snowfall for the season. we already set the record for the month of february and im not sure how close we are now but id say we are around 6 inches or so away from setting the record for our area i believe. anyways, i use to love the snow when i had my 4x4 dodge, but i hated it at the same time because i was a frame carpenter. now, though, i have an is300 and getting stuck is a part of my daily commute almost!! I HATE SNOW!!!

I used to love winter when I was a kid...

Now, on the top of the mountain in northeast PA, I positively hate it.

Hopefully, when my daily commute goes away, I'll get to enjoy some of it again, snowballing with my kids next year and not having to think of charming icy roads awaiting for me next morning...

Winter? NO..... I like it when it's hot, when people are little crazy and girls and me aren't wearing much cloathings; beach, diving, water skiing, fishing without coldness :D it doesn't get much better than that....winter makes me  ...... I adore spring and summer in Croatia (although winters are not too cold)

I like winter. It's pretty fun to walk by 1000 kg, 100 hp machines unable to get out of their driveway ;)

Seriously, I don't mind the weather itself, the cold and the snow are fine, just dress for it. The drabness and lack of light does get old after a couple of months, but then again, in August I long for winter...

I thnik I am the farthest North here. ( maybe spare Edmonton)
But I am on the shores of Georgian Bay About 30min. north of Barrie On. We got about 40cm of snow not to long ago. ( not sure about inches) But we have about 8 feet total!
a centimetre is about this ****** big. We always get snowsqualls.

But snowmobiling is great. I go to my moms friends farm to ride since I can't "legally" ride one yet. But I mountain bike on Blue mountain In the summer. (30min. drive) We also have the longest freshwater beach in the world. ( but all the beachfront buildings that have been there since the 50's burnt down in the fall.)

But I have to agree, It is rough.

Not Particularly

#14 Post by ArtShapiro » Mon Mar 03, 2008 12:24 pm

I suppose most folks would laugh at what passes for winter in Southern California. I've lived in places such as Detroit, so I know what winter can bring. But winter here isn't always pleasant. I spend my weekends out on the bicycle, and winter here means rain. I've already lost a few weekend rainout days. Saturday was supposed to be sunny and pleasant by all forecasts. Instead it was misty and drizzly all day and I had to ride 108 miles never taking off the jacket, kneewarmers, or armwarmers. Bah. And it only rains on weekends for some bizarre reason.

Of course it will only be a few months till it's ungodly hot here, and with the relatively southern latitude an 80 degree day can char your flesh. A 95 or 97 degree day will make me long for winter again.

You might find it interesting (or amusing) that there may be some science behind your belief about weekend rain. A snippet from a 1998 US News magazine article:

"Weekend rainouts could be our own fault
Nothing wrecks a picnic faster than a cloudburst, and doesn't it just seem that weekends are uncommonly soggy? Then on Monday, the weather is glorious? Maybe it's not your imagination. Weekends, on the East Coast at least, are wetter than weekdays--and the soggy Saturdays are probably caused by human activity.
Two Arizona State University climatologists, including one best known as a skeptic of global warming, say they have found that if rain were random through the week, each day should get one seventh, or 14.3 percent, of the rain. Instead, Saturdays are wettest, with 16 percent. Mondays are driest, at 13.1 percent. Put another way, Saturdays are 22 percent wetter than Mondays, with the rest of the week gradually getting wetter toward the Saturday peak. Sundays are a bit above average."

I could send you the whole piece if you like. In your area, agricultural dust or plain old traffic dust could create hydroscopic nuclei, thus enhancing rain drop formation.

Summer isnt that bad up here in Wasaga Beach, On. It is usually about 30 degrees celcius. 70 or 80 degrees farenheight. (i think)

The only problem about summer here is that people come from all over Canada to see our beach. The longest freshwater in the world belongs to our small town of 16000. In the spring and fall it is quite cozy. When we get thew whole town to ourselves.( finally!)
Another problem about summer here is that we get unbearable smog! ( environment canada has issue warnings to stay indoors, and people with heart conditions and all that have been known to die.(quite rarely, but it happens.)

Sri, let me know and I will be more than happy to ship you some bags of snow. Here in NH we haven't seen top of lawns since early November - there is about 8" to 15" of snow on the lawn despite temperature getting above freezing often. Last Saturday I discovered yellow pages book buried deep in the snow that the snow blower got stuck on - who knows when it got delivered and how long its been sitting there. Needless to say, even in the plastic bag it was wet and frozen solid like a brick.

I would have to say I 'appreciate' winter. It was my favourite season as a kid. Growing up, as I did, in Fort St. John, BC (~56 deg. N), I'd better have enjoyed it--it lasted for 6 months some years! In fact, one year we saw snow every single month of the year; not that it stayed around, but we saw it falling. Having said that, we also had a Christmas or two with no snow . . . ('87 comes to mind). Skating, sledding, skiing, digging snow forts, snowball fights, northern lights, hot chocolate with marshmallows (NOT a summer drink!) . . . those things are hard to beat in my books. I've lived through -50C (before wind chill was factored in); it's kind of funny driving with flat spots on your tires for the first few km until the tires warm up. Recently I spent 5 years in Solomon Islands, ~9 deg. S, and let me tell you, of all the things I missed about Canada, winter topped the list. When seasons never change, life becomes an interminable drag. When you live through a winter, you live with the hope of spring: new life, new leaves, renewed vigour. With no winter, no seasons, there is nothing to look forward to except more of the same. Yeah, I appreciate winter.

You do have a vaid point Paul Unger. There would be nothing to look foreward to if there were no seasons. Winter is not the harbinger of death (if I even spelled harbinger right  ) Or anything like that, but I do prefer summer over winter.

I guess being from Ontario you're somewhat familiar with mid-30s and 75% humidity (which equals a humidex of ~45C). But would it be "no problem" every day? with no air conditioning? ocean at 28C? There's literally no relief from the heat. For me there are days on which it is a problem . . . :( Don't get me wrong, it has its own beauty; but it may also be part of why I appreciate winter.

Having lived in Ireland for many years, seasons there are a total mix-up (and a joke as well).
You'd get summer-fall-winter-spring all within 24 hours, and it could happen on anyone of the 365 days!
In 8 years we had perhaps some snowfall on 3 different days.
We were lucky if the snow lasted for about 3 HOURS!
Moving to Pennsylvania was a relief! We also lived in Switzerland for many years, where we had snow galore for up to 5 months.
I love seasons, incl. winter, but like George said, I'm starting to hate the snow too! Enough is enough!
The statistics for NEPA claim it to be the worst winter for snow in about 60 years.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I enjoy the change of seasons and can generally welcome it. Winter becomes more of a "frustration" than anything. Especially this year, but I'll get to that.

Having snow on Christmas requires a winter season... just one of those traditional things that I can't live without. My nephew LOVES playing in the snow... and of course being a good uncle I enjoy being out in the snow with him as he enjoys his youth. When he goes in to warm up, I shovel..

My frustrations about winter... I haven't been to my Tuesday night class at college in 3 weeks because of inclement weather. Not the normal reaction to that, I know. I am 30 years old and in college for a second time for a career change, I want to get the most bang for my buck. With all of the snow come "issues" such as ice, snow removal, and road hazards. I replaced my car about a month ago (car's choice, not mine)... I promptly removed a mirror on the side of the garage backing out one night because of snow and ice. You can imagine the obscenities that flew at that point.

So besides relatively minor annoyances that go along with winter, I could take it or leave it really. I like the change, but prefer the warmer weather.
