Moving from Virgina to Wisconsin (via Chicago) had me enjoying winter in the beginning...I'd use the snow shovel instead of the sow blower. And now I am complaining that I can't fix the %^$^ snowblower....grrrr The snow is nice...really. It is the frigid cold that I can't handle. Seeing windchills in the -40s (fahrenheit), has made me appreciate the warmer weather that I used to despise.
Though, my mom always said, you can add as many layers of clothing as you'd like, but you can only take off so much...

That's what I always say too: once you're naked and still sweating to death (at least that's what it feels like sometimes), then what?!tfflivemb2 wrote:Though, my mom always said, you can add as many layers of clothing as you'd like, but you can only take off so much...
PS not that I run around naked very often . . .

Are temps really that hot and that cold!
To tifflivemb2: I like that saying! And don't worry! I don't even have a snowblower! I shovel 2 driveways a day! But I get paid $300 a winter for one of them so it is not that bad.

Five of us on our street, over a Saturday afternoon beer at the pub, a couple of decades ago, agreed to purchase a behemouth of a snowblower (10 HP, 26 inch cut, dual-stage, heavy metal housing, chains, drift cutters, and so on). It continues to run. You can't buy such a beast (that I know of any more) as newers ones are lighter, cheaper, and more prone to breakdown.tfflivemb2 wrote:<snip> And now I am complaining that I can't fix the %^$^ snowblower....grrrr <snip>
Nonetheless, our blower gets picked up and repair by the local power shop, usually about every other season. The important thing is that it keeps running well, and this year, with snow in February in Toronto breaking records back to the mid-1800's, we needed it. ... JDH

I'd like winter a lot more if we actually HAD winter in this area. It gets cold, briefly, then warms up right as precipitation comes our way.
It's BS and I hate it.
People complain about the cold, but then they complain even more when it's 90 degrees with 100% humidity.
Shoot me now.

In my younger days, I looked forward to sled riding with my friends. We a lots of hills to choose from, and had a ball.
Then I got older, and we discovered that driving on snow covered roads could actually be fun. Sure, we went into the ditch a few times, but... repairs to the vehicle got expensive, so we had to come up with something new.
Then we discovered that using a car hood as a sled being towed behind a 4 X 4 on a snow covered road was fun too... as long as we went a little slower around the corners so the rider wouldn't bounce off mailboxes and such. A few doctor bills later, and we decided it was getting too expensive and had to come up with something new.
Then we discovered skiing, and I really enjoyed it. Giant slalom is the only way to fly... but then lift ticket prices went through the roof along with the price of gas to get there.
Now, I sit in my basement and repair computers as a hobby until spring breaks.
BTW: I noticed a crocus on the side of my house yesterday. A most welcome site for me!

Before anyone tries it, a few words of caution...
1.) Little to no control over where you go, onroad or off. Sliding into a ditch can be fatal depending on speed and what all is in the ditch with you. (fence poasts, mailboxes, telephone poles, you get the idea)
2.) Stopping is darn near impossible until you bite the rear bumper of the tow vehicle.
3.) Smooth surface hoods have absolutely no control and are not likely to stay behind the tow vehicle by any means. A hood with a ridge running the length of it works best. Example of a great hood is one off a 1963 Corvair. (Actually the trunk, because the trunk is in the front of the car)
4.) Take the time to mount some plywood to sit on, and consider a cushion off an old couch or something. Trust me on this.
5.) WEAR A HELMET AND WHATEVER OTHER PROTECTIVE WEAR YOU HAVE. YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU HAD IT THE FIRST TIME YOU HAVE TO BAIL OUT TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH SOMETHING.
We never got caught, but I'm sure the police would not appreciate this idea of fun. We limited our activities to seldom used roads out in the rural areas. Seasonal use only roads and such.
I must say that I would not recommend this to anyone. It's too easy to get yourself really hurt.
If you have an open field to try it in and a decent 4 X 4, go for it.
