Possible PayPal problem.

#1 Post by Phazer » Wed Mar 12, 2008 8:08 pm

OK, here's a new one for me. Long time PayPal user with maybe 40-50 transactions of me paying. I buy an eBay item on the 9th and I notice an "hour glass" icon on my won items. It says payment pending. I go to PayPal and it also confirms payment pending and says it's funding by e-check. I have my account to withdraw from my checking account which has plenty and has always paid instantly. I'll admit, we did away with credit cards over a year ago but I still have backup funding listed as one. The e-check says 3-5 days to clear and it should clear the 12th, (today) but hasn't yet. I contacted the seller and he is going out of town for 2 weeks and will go ahead and ship tommorow, (he's getting +++ feedback)(it's only $8.00). But I thought this was all strange to say the least.

George.....I know you despise PayPal.... :D :D

I've used PayPal for quite some time and I don't believe I've ever run into this. My instant transfer payments are also deducted from my checking account with a credit card as backup. eCheck is a separate method to pay and shouldn't have changed to your default. eBay/PayPal has recently changed (within the last few days) the formatting of the checkout process so this may have been a hiccup.

I had this happen to me. This happens when your backup source of funding approaches the expiration date. Probably your credit card is about to expire. I was about 2 months from the expiration date on my card when this happened. Maybe they want you to re-verify your card. They should at least give you advance warning when this is going to happen. Instead you find out during a transaction.

I don't recall this happening to me, but I'll say something else...for a ridiculous amount such as $8.00 it's OK to pay by "live funds", but anything above, say, $25 should be CC-funded on an eBay transaction, IMHO. Your $$$$, your call. Let me shut up and not go on a tirade here..

Ray is right when he says that it's probably a hickup of a new eBay checkout system...they've ended up charging my (long since closed) checking account, although I clicked on payment by credit card...oh well...you'll notice that I've since changed a part of my signature...

AHHHHH....."the backup funding" is probably the hiccup. Even though that account is closed, the expiration date is this month. In fact, last night I removed it as my backup funding. I wonder if I can keep it with no backup?

THANKS GUYS!!!

Just got this a little while ago. It only took 5 days to clear, (ggsshhh).

Your PayPal payment by bank transfer to (removed for privacy) for $8.99 USD has been processed and automatically credited to the PayPal account of the payment's recipient. Thus, this transaction is completed.

It may take a few moments for this transaction to appear in the Recent Activity list on your Account Overview.

Here's the scoop. When you don't use a credit card as back-up funding, (we have none, my bad), PayPal requests money from my checking account, this occurs as an e-check to PayPal, which takes 3-5 days to reach/clear to them. Once PayPal receives said funds, the payment is instantly credited to the person selling me the item. Hence, the 3-5 day delay.

And I thought the days of electronic banking made things go zip-----zap-------badaboom. :(

this JUST happened to me last week on 3 different transactions. I guess i havent used ebay in a few months or so? I have over 80 ebay transactions and every single one the seller received payment IMMEDIATELY. I need to check with paypal about this because those 3 recent transactions took forever to go through. And, i know my credit card is nowhere near close to expiration. huh

Okay, an update:

Today I tried sending another member of this forum some money and I noticed that PayPal was defaulting to a payment via a credit card instead of transferring it out of my checking account. When I tried to change the funding source, the only options available was to use a CC or an eCheck. It just so happened that I had received a payment from this member for an amount of money slightly more than what I needed to send. So thinking logically, I figured that I could simply perform a "partial refund" and that would be that. The last screen which confirmed my payment said that it would be deducted from my checking account, even as far as listing the last four digits of the account number. However, when I looked at the transaction history an hour later, it said "pending" :?: . I checked and it's pending because it's an eCheck :!: . Grrrrr....

What triggered this? Not sure. It might be because the original money that was sent to me was not covered by the "Seller Protection Policy" (no address was provided with that transaction). I originally thought that it might be due to the member's account history. Even though it is a Verified Premier Member account, it has a "zero" transaction score. However, I tried sending some money to another email address that I've paid before and that has a 21000+ score, but it also blocks an instant transfer from my checking account. It's not the amount of money that I'm sending; I just tried sending $1 and the payment is defaulting to my credit card again and not allowing me to select the checking account :( . It also does not matter if I select "goods" or "service/other" options.

I think it might be PayPal's attempt at getting me to upgrade my personal account (read: get more money from me). The instant cynic in me said that PayPal is trying to earn some money on the "float" but I've checked my checking account balance and as of now, about 8 hours after entering the refund, it still has not been been touched. Of course that could just mean that PayPal will take it out tomorrow and have one less day to make some interest; the refund is expected to "clear" on the 20th.

Speaking about 'Reputation' points at PayPal:
I am a Verified Buyer and a Verified Seller with a Premier Account.
I have bought from, and sold to, many verified others, yet my 'Reputation' or Status stays at 0 (zero), which shows as: Verified(0).
This should be Verified(45) or whatever, and be updated after every transaction with another Verified member.
I have contacted PayPal 2 times about this already, first time about 3 months ago, second time about 2 weeks ago.
Both times I actually spoke to a human and both times they confirmed, that PayPal is aware of this. They have a problem, which they seem unable to solve so far, but they also insisted that these 'reputation' points are being collected, and will be applied, as soon as they solve this problem.
I don't understand that an outfit like PayPal can not sort out such a small hitch within a reasonable time!

PayPal is retarded with the e-check stuff. My Dad had problems with that when he started using it back in February. Not only that, payments were being sent to his old email address. Their system is complete garbage...even though I've personally had no problems over 6 years of using it.
