Do you guys lock up your laptops at home?

#1 Post by Mr. Cloud » Thu Mar 13, 2008 12:51 am

In case there's a break-in or something? I want to, I even bought the security cable but I'm a very forgetful person and I'd be in constant fear of losing the key when I want to take the laptop out! And if there were a fire, I'd want to be able to just grab the thinkpad and run! I have no intention of letting my thinkpad end up like the thinkpad in the "Legends of ThinkPad: Melted" video!

No, I believe that if someone can get in past the door they also have tools to get anything valuable inside if it's not in a safe.

Anyway, I'd be too lazy to do it in any case. Break-ins are rare here..in the small village I grew up people didn't even lock their doors very often.

Absolutely not. I've got too many of them to be able to even attempt to do that anyway.

Due to some very nasty things happening to this house while it was being built, we have a pretty advanced alarm system. And I also have some interesting stuff in the drawer by my bed...if someone should be stupid enough to try and get in while the house is occupied... 8)

In countries like here you are not allowed to protect your property effectively unless having problems by it :?

I don't bother with it, don't have a laptop lock either. None of my laptops are that awesome.

If I had a X300, perhaps. I know a guy who had one of the super-small VAIOs (not sure of model) that retail for $2500+ in first year. Someone got into his suite-style residence, into his suite, then picked his room lock and stole the laptop while he was sleeping in the room. This is a 3m x 5m room we're talking about.

Wow, I guess that "Someone" knew about his laptop and wanted it really badly. Oh well, "Someone" set up him the bomb! I feel sorry for the guy!

I don't lock up my laptops, but when I am out of town for two or more days, I hide them somewhere inside the apartment.

Waste of time, if you ask me. They'll just trash your house looking for valuables anyway. They did mine.

Is that a reference to someone set up us the bomb?

Either way, someone definitely knew the laptop was there, and definitely knew this guy was a sound sleeper. Sounds like an inside job, for sure!

I actually voted yes, albeit it's not often that I do. It's more when I think the super might come 'round to fix something when I'm not there. (I usually don't allow that without my presence, but you can't control things when you're not there and it's an "emergency")

If I don't plan on travelling around with my TP, I sometimes will use a kensington-type lock and wind it around a table leg. yeah, they'll take the table, but they won't enjoy it. It clashes with everything. ;)

I don't, I just have extra homeowners insurance on everything (mostly musical equipment) in the house.

Just make sure you have the serial numbers and pictures of everything.

We don't lock anything in the house, and seldom lock the house itself.

Where I live, the best protection is a long country driveway. Thieves don't want to deal with one way in and one out.

At least that's the THEORY. :D

I used to think that until about a month ago.

If they can get in through the locks on the doors, they can get through just about ANY laptop lock that you have. Not to brag, but I can open a standard key laptop lock in about 3-5 seconds with out making noise or damaging it. There was a thread discussing this technique sometime back, and despite my urges to remove it, it stuck around so that people will know that these locks are VERY easy to get around.

So my vote = No...

And like many others on here....I have TOO MANY to lock up.

Unfortunately, I have to second this one. And, having experienced both versions, I'd prefer to be set-up and have only the valuables taken away. I've had the "set-up" scenario happen to me twice in my previous life, and would go with it any day of the week.

Mote with crocodiles would be my choice, but it's unfortunately illegal in state of Pennsylvania...

My thinkpads are not worth enough to lock them up.

Well I'm in residence right now, so I keep my base locked up and than I am taking my laptop with me everyday to class. But when I am home, its always in the base and locked in.
It takes 5secs or so to secure it so I figure why not!

I guess your Uncle is a locksmith also? ;)

And based on what YOU and I know...we better understand the saying:

"Locks are to keep HONEST people...HONEST"

FWIW: I MADE THE MISTAKE OF UNLOCKING A SAFE AT WORK THAT HAD BEEN LOCKED FOR 8 YEARS-they lost the combination-...EVERYONE WAS AMAZED...HOWEVER IT WAS NEVER THE SAME AFTERWARDS...and yes, I cleared it with upper before doing it...they thought I was blowing smoke...to this day the safe is USABLE without a SCRATCH...yet they will not use it...wonder WHY?
