Who's ThinkPad is the slowest...
As the title should suggest, this is a thread for all of us who own early and late model ThinkPads to fight over which of us has the slowest notebook.
And to kick off, I own a:
ThinkPad 380ED (2635-6AU)
32mb RAM
3gb Hard Drive (WinME Installed)
20x CD-ROM
12.1" SVGA TFT
A single really junky mono speaker built in

ThinkPad T60: 2GHZ CD T2500, 3gb RAM, 14.1" XGA, 60gb 7k100, Win 7 Ult
Latitude E7250: i5 5300U 2.3ghz, 12gb RAM, 12" 1080p touch, 256gb SSD, Win 10

Thinkpad 700C (9552-30B)
486SLC/25
16MB RAM
120MB HD (W3.1)
No optical drive
10.4" Color VGA TFT
Mono speaker
Normally I'd be feeling pretty smug about now thinking that I had won this challenge hands down.
But I'm almost positive that Bill has a 386SL/25 Thinkpad 300 in his collection!

James

I'd leave upgrading the processor to the professionals. You might be able to get a slightly faster proc in your computer, but not enough that it would be worth the risk, time or money.

Well, looks like I'm going to have to pull my ThinkPad out of this race, I just installed a semi-new 6gb hard drive in it today and in a bout a week or so, the 64mb RAM chip I ordered will be here, and that will push my RAM up to 80, since I have to take out the 16b chip that's currently in there.

Well, as of right now, it looks like JHEM is winning this race with his ThinkPad 700c w/ 486SLC 25, Bplaut is in 2nd place with his ThinkPad 701c w/ 486 50, and a close call between my 380ED and Robert Casteel's 560E, but my ThinkPad has a 6gb HD vs. his 2.1gb HD but since the 560E has more RAM, my computer will hold 3rd untill I get the RAM chip I ordered, which will put the 560E in 3rd. Yes, I know that anyone who can read and has read to this point should be able to figure out these results on their own, but what the heck, I am really bored right now and trying to kill time.

For any person recognized in the top three, you get a free* vacation to the destination of your choosing, a brand new laptop computer of your choosing** and $100,000,000 USD!!!*** Congratulations!!!
*You have to make all pay for all expenses, make all the arrangements and do your own planning.
**You have to go to the computer store of your choice on your own, pay for it with your money and deal with any problems on your own.
***Out of your own wallet, if you can't come up with the money, then I can repo your car.

I have a new old laptop to enter into this race. Today, my friend gave me his old ThinkPad 760E. The computer has a Pentium 120 (no L2), 32mb RAM, 3gb HD, 4x CD and a 12.1" TFT.
Postscript: Just found out that the computer does in fact have L2 cache, but for some odd reason, Windows does not detect it.

For me, the replacement parts I can't find on eBay, I either build myself or find some way to make do without. You'd actually be amazed at the availibility of parts for these old machines too, beleive it or not, you can still buy brand new batteries and RAM for just about every model ThinkPad that's been talked about on this thread. What's even more impressive, however, is how usefull these machines can be if you have an older copy of Windows and Office and/or a wireless connection.

Don't know about availability of replacement parts for my machines, since I've never had a single thing break on either Thinkpad! Have replaced the 360's battery twice (it is 11 years old), and batteries seem to still be available for the old machines.ambientscape wrote:I would like to know whether you guys can still get those replacement parts for those machine?

So....when are you intend to let your 360 to retire for good?? I think he's been a very loyal companion with you, I guess....
Did your thinkpad manage to overcome the Y2K as well??

I think this can sorta go for most poeple who use ThinkPads as old as the ones listed in here, but when you've had a ThinkPad running this long, well, same goes as for a really nice tool set or a pair of gloves or a coat that's this old, you're gonna keep using that ThinkPad until the day it dies, assuming that happens before the owner dies.

Y2K was not a problem. Everything went fine. I think Alpha is right, I (rather my wife) will keep using the TP360 until the machine dies. But sooner I think, is that she will someday need to upgrade her Court Reporting Software, which will probably need an O/S like XP. At that point, the 360 will go into retirement. It does run WIN3.1 pretty well, but the mono screen isn't a great choice for any version of Windows.
