USB1.1 Hub connected to USB2.0 port = USB2.0 Hub?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Thu Mar 27, 2008 9:26 am

I got a 4-port Compaq CPQ14USB hub, which is USB1.1
If I connect that to a USB2.0 port, will the hub become USB2.0 as well?

I don't know for sure but I would probably say no. After all connecting a USB 1.1 device to a 2.0 port is still a 1.1 device.

Look at it this way...

If you hook up a garden hose to a fire hose, you will only get the maximum flow the garden hose will allow regardless of what flow the fire hose may be capable of.

Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain.

Now THAT is a good analogy :D

He's correct. Ultimately, the closest connection to the motherboard is the one that generally limits the speed. Hooking up a 2.0 hub will not increase the speed of the 1.1 port, as the 1.1 port is the gateway to the motherboard for the data being passed.

The only reason I asked is, that I don't know exactly how a hub works. I thought it was just a 4-way splitter.
