I'm advancing from your basic "drug store snapshot camera" to something quite special for me.
Hope you like some humble pictues taken on my first outing with it. Also some other pictures taken with a couple other cameras are included in the folder. All pictures are family friendly, but most are great big 3 meg jpegs.

I find the dpreview forum a good place for learning. I only wish their forum's layout could be as good as ours.
Thanks for the link. Yep, the layout isn't pleasing. I really dislike black colored pages. They are a visual annoyance, but I will browse the site anyway from time to time.ulrich.von.lich wrote:I find the dpreview forum a good place for learning. One of my life goals is to become an avid photographer, get a good camera and take many quality pictures. And actually learn how to use the functions on a good SLR, and not just rely on "auto mode" as I currently do.
But, right now too focused on other things (like school), and am still using my little compact Sony because I am traveling lots and it fits easily in a pocket.

The Canon D40 is my first "serious" camera, and I think it will work out well because the learning curve is not discouragingly steep.Trekk69 wrote:One of my life goals is to become an avid photographer, get a good camera and take many quality pictures. Yep, it's rather big and heavy but with the camera in the car when I travel it will be handy for those photo opportunities that show up so often. Even with my little Fuji pocket camera, I am not always sure how the shot worked out. With the Canon, I can take the picture, see the results on a nice large screen, and know that I got a keeper right off.
Besides, computers and cameras play very well together these days, and that makes it even more fun. No more waiting for film processing.
Ya, I have the Sony digital Cybershot, the one that looks like a credit-card in size. And I love it for traveling, because its a quick pull-out and take a picture....especially in museums or other places with 'no photography' signs....its small enough (and I'm still that kind of person), to take a picture without getting much attention.

I also have a Sony Cybershot (T3) which I can take anywhere such as to class or to parties at night. The majority of most important photos in my life were taken by this little P&S camera. I agree their portability and discreetness is something that a DSLR can never offer. Plus, my T3 allows me to take high resolution (640*480) videos at 30fps.
I'm new to photography too and here's a link to some photos I took with my Oly E-410. The performance is nowhere near the Canon 40D but it still takes great shots when the lighting condition is correct.
