Stop websites from customizing browsers' windows? PICS

I'm using Firefox.
Some websites when opening links or popups they change the default display of the browser such as turning-off menu bars, bookmarks bars, etc. How do I stop them doing such things?

Next to "Enable Javascript" in the settings (under Content), there's an Advanced button.

If that doesn't work... dunno. Maybe there's an extension to selectively disable annoying Javascript stuff (there's already a way to disable it totally, but that probably won't work...).

Nope that's not it. I tried.

I remember read somewhere that there's an easy way to do it but can't find it now.

aaa's suggestion sounds right to me. Maybe you can give us a sample URL so we could test it out and come up with a solution.

The issues you identify are normally controlled by JavaScript, so modifying your JavaScript settings (in any browser) are the likely solution.

try this to see what i'm trying to figure out:
- use Firefox
- go to abc.com
- click on the red button Full Episodes
- on the left hand side pick a show, i'm watching Lost btw
- you might have to install the video plugin towatch it in HD, no big deal
- when the video loads, all the menu bars will be gone, i try to go to Full Screen, no menu bars to choose and F11 doesn't work either
- close all other open windows, just leave the playing video window on
- now right there go to task bar kill firefox.exe
- when reopen firefox choose restore session
- now the video window will reload, but this time all the menu, bookmarks bars appear as default.
- go to View- FullScreen and you can watch it full screen

My question was how do I make all menu bars appear by default without the website (popup) changing it so I can watch it in Full Screen

I see. That seems to happen on my Firefox as well even with those pesky JavaScript options turned off. Not sure how to fix that.

On Opera, my JavaScript settings are preventing the pop-up window from appearing as a new instance of Opera, so the address bar, tabs, etc. are all there, but on Firefox, a new instance of Firefox is opening up.

I don't have a solution for this. I suspect it is simply that their JavaScript code is managing to get around Firefox's attempts at blocking such behaviour.

I've been going to abc.com for the last couple of weeks in order to catch up with Lost so I know what you are trying to do. I also use Firefox (2.0.0.14) with Java and Javascript enabled, abc.go.com and dynamic.abc.go.com allowed in my pop-up list and what happens is that the video screen opens in its own window, without the menu bars and bookmarks:



I normally use the "normal" view (above) instead of any of the HD versions since I only have a 1MB DSL pipe, but even with the 1280 x 720 HD setting (on an SXGA+ screen), this is what I see:



It appears that you have to have Javascript enabled to even be able to select a show to watch. The video also appears to be streamed using Adobe Flash.

If your main Firefox window "disappears", then maybe you haven't added abc.go.com in your allowed pop-up list????

i'm using IE7 and it just sends a popup window like Ray has... i thought that was how it was supposed to be. If you somehow block popups i guess it just opens it in the same window which has a preset size and look.
