I find for flights in Canada, I have always been asked to take my laptop out of my bag. And once they even made me turn in on (but that was a couple of years ago).
Having flown so much now, I have what I like to call my 'traveling uniform': it has no metal, etc that would set off the detector, so as long as I take off my coat, I just strut right through the metal detector (often to quizzical looks from the security guard!).
