I'd like to know how much my Thinkpad is worth to YOU! :)

#1 Post by Crunch » Wed May 14, 2008 7:30 am

Hi all...I just read a thread where someone asked if it was worth going for a specific deal or whatever.

I'd like to know from you guys what my system is worth. It IS a T60p, so not the latest model, but that's by choice, and I did three major, and expensive upgrades, which are "T61p-like", if you will. ;)

I upgraded it from a T2500 Core Duo 2.0GHz to a T7600 Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz (was never available on the T60p's, except maybe the really late ones with widescreen that had no more Flexview, and that's still a maybe). Less than six month old, and purchased brand new!

I put in the Atheros AR5008 a/b/g/n card, and in the process replaced the Intel 3945ABG card that is in T60p's by default.

I upgraded to a MUCH bigger and much faster 200GB Hitachi Tavelstar 7,200rpm HDD with FDE (only six months old) as the primary drive. Bought new!

And then there's the IPS screen, which is even a special version of IPS that no T61p has.

It is in warranty until mid-2009, and from looking at it, you'd think it was brand new, as the person I bought it from apparently babied it. Not so much as a scratch, and the screen is impeccable. No dead pixels on this 15" UXGA screen. Not one.

So honestly, considering what the upgrades go for, even when bought cheaply, and NONE of my upgrades are cheap stuff. ALL brand new directly from Lenovo (T7600, the 2x2GB RAM sticks, the 200GB drive, amongst other FRU's). For exact specs, please see my signature.

I've been wondering this for a while now, and I'd like some HONEST opinions!

What's my Thinkpad worth to YOU?

Thanks all who participate! 8)

Put it on e-bay. It's not worth anything to anyone who doesn't want to buy it from you.

agreed.   putting a value on it would be difficult for those who aren't interested in buying it.   it's worth zero to me as i don't want or need it. ;)

list it in the marketplace as you'll have a better audience.

Frankly, my perception of its value is less than if you'd left the CPU alone. I'd be concerned whether you "knew what you were doing" with regard to hooking up the heat sink, etc., and how that might affect the long-term stability of the system. 16% CPU"bump" isn't worth all that much real system performance, I don't think.

@swktn77a, and erik: Well, yea, of course. I am just wondering where everyone here would put the value ASSUMING you guys were interested, especially taking into account the upgrades I made. They were not cheap upgrades.

Putting it in the Marketplace is not a good idea, as I don't want to get anyone excited when I'm only wanting to gauge the value. That wouldn't be fair to anyone who would want it. ;)

You could probably walk away with $1200-1300 if you put it in the Marketplace. Less than that on eBay.

I am not a buyer for your machine, but have owned and sold several T60p units, and this is what my experience is telling me.

Another thing...both here and on eBay...very few people care about the upgrades, and you're highly unlikely to get your money out of them unless you sell them separately.

My question being: why bother selling? If you liked it enough to customize it as much as you have, there's no "next step" if you want a FlexView-equipped unit...

Oh, I'm not selling. LOL...If you offered me $3,000 for this baby right now, I would not have to think about it. I'd turn it down in a New York second! I'm so super happy with this thing, and warranty extension will be easy, but not necessary for a long time to come. I was only wondering as to what people here thought but ok, noone wants to play, so fine. Nooooo biggie! ;)

Dude, then what's the point of this thread? Bragging rights? Also, for your information, those upgrades can be purchased separately for cheaper. By buying them directly from Lenovo, you're just getting ripped off a significant amount of money. Oh but that's okay, since you're apparently happy with it :)
To you it may worth $3000, to some people it doesn't work a cent, since they have no need for it.
Pointless thread.

Agreed. If you have no interest in selling it, what's the point of asking for a monetary value? As AvalonXIII pointed out, it may be worth nothing to me - you couldn't pay me to carry around a 15" laptop every day (as I do with my X61).

So if you would turn down a $3000.00 offer for your upgraded T60P, what do YOU think it's worth?
I agree with George, around here and e-bay it's about 1200~1300.

For way less then $3000.00 you can get a very nice T61P with much faster cpu,4gig ram,320gig hdd,15.4 WUXGA(not a IPS screen i know But still a nice screen). And still have money left over.

you're free to ask whatever questions you want, including ones about the value of your T60p.   just keep in mind that opinions will differ on questions like these and the responses may not always be as expected. :)

... and?

Is this an extreme example of our society insisting on putting a monetary value on everything? You're essentially pricing out your affection here.

Yea hah...No kidding! ;) I'm always surprised at how emotionally invested some people become with a simple, and granted, not important thread. Out of mere curiosity I started this thread, and then all these annoyed people. Does everything have to be so serious?

If they don't "like" the thread, why not just move on? Why make a federal case out of everything? I see it in other forums, too, when someone posts something that is deemed to be silly, or stupid, by a large number of people, and then some members go to shred him/her to pieces. lol...Why? Oh well...My suggestion: Don't go getting your panties all bunched up over what is essentially nothing.

And hey, how about those Lakers!? 8)

Really, not to "flame" or "torch" or whatever it's called, but how valuable is this discussion? I've seen 600s like the one I paid 5 bucks for at Goodwill go on eBay, with no battery warranty (meaning it may not even work, I guess), for mid to high 200s, and to get a wireless card is extra. I've also seen lappies almost as new as yours with need of what many on this forum would consider an easy fix go for close to the same. It's really all in the perception and presentation, apparently. Personally, if it came down to it, I'd gut my working 390X to fix a broken Transnote or hock it to put food on the table, but any other time it's priceless. And, unless I missed a show and need to catch it online, I hardly ever use my wife's nearly new HP.

That having been said, they're all cool mods, and you have my respect, there. I'm looking forward to similar mods on mine, though still an order of magnitude slower; it IS only a 390X...

Just risking bankruptcy throwing in my 2 cents...

Too bad you can't price it on IBM's website. When I did a lot of upgrades to my Dell totaling $300, the value of the laptop went up by about $600 and ended up being a $1200 laptop that I paid $900 for. Of course it isn't worth that much since it has no warranty now but still ...

if you want a quick value, i'd go to one of those electronic trade-in, or recycling sites, and see how much they'd pay you for it.

it's interesting to see how little you can get for trading in old equipment.
