WAAAYY off-topic: Mac!
OK, I have a new one, and I know there's a work-around with addressing and passwords, but I'm thinking there might be a similar fix to what I found when I put XP on a couple of number-series TPs.
My wife's best friend has one of those newer iBooks, pre-MacBook Air, that she wants to move her iTunes music to from her old Gateway. I've gotten the music from her old Gateway to my less-old Gateway that runs about twice as fast (1GHz v. 450Mhz). Now, I have this nifty do-dad that lets you hook up just about any drive to another computer via USB, even came with a power brick for IDE tower drives, but the Mac doesn't recognize any drive I try that way. No problem: she can surf wirelessly on our router, so I just have to make her computer see the actual network computers and vice versa, right?
Without getting more technical than I'm obviously capable of, the only way to do it involves searching for the computer at her "address", and then inputting a username and password. Oddly, I ran into this trying to put my folder back onto my 390X from my wife's Vista laptop. It seems this is a common compatibility issue with Vista, though I've never run into with any other Vista-to-XP file transfer. My thought is this: In XP, under properties in "Computer," there's a place where I can change the computer name and workgroup name. After I restart, BAM, I can see the other computers on the network. I didn't have to enter a password to "pull" the folder from her computer back to mine. So, is there a similar thing in Leopard for that? I realize it's possible I'm on the wrong forum entirely, but I know I saw somewhere (maybe not this forum) that someone had run some iteration of OSX on their ThinkPad. I won't belabor the issue, but any insight would most definitely be appreciated.
Also, now that I have 2 running TPs and the parts to build a third, I'll be switching to their type numbers for my signature as I've seen so many others do. It's a little cooler than Cicero.

Small hint for your sig: also put in your TP type, like 370, i1300, T23, T42 whatever.
We can't all really remember which type goes with which laptop...

I hope you don't mind me nit-picking:
the MODEL is one thing, the TYPE is another 7-character code
MODEL T23 (390X, 600E etc.)
TYPE 2645-4MU, etc.
See my sig underneath.

You're enjoying this, aren't you?
I had this fight with those @#$%holes at Lenovo tech support, but I expect them not to know &*^!.
I figured here, of all places, a little abbreviation was allowed...
All 390 series are 2626-XXX. I find a lot of reference to 2624-XXX, but all info I can find is from sources based in British Commonwealth states; maybe the TrackPoint is on the other side...
Basically, if there's any difference in a specific type based on solely the first 4 digits, I can't find it. The info I found that austensibly came from IBM (i.e. the info pdfs at ThinkWiki) makes no mention of a second set of machines. In your case, all T2x machines are the same "prefix," while T3x machines would all be 2366. I didn't read far enough into the pdf file to see if T4xs are another "series," or if they continue the T3x line. Any info the Lenovo support site has between the two is really more a distinction without a difference.
That having been said, the TrackPoint "eraser" on my 600 is from a WinBook, which is green. I call that one the evil, mirror universe ThinkPad.
And, yes, when I cus at my kids, it comes out as cartoon noises, like on MythBusters. It's very difficult for them to take me seriously when I'm mad. Very counterproductive.

As for the model numbers, things got more complicated as the Thinkpads moved along...
2647 can be any T2x series...while T30 can be 2366 or 2367.
2652 can be A30 or A31
2653 can be A31, A30p, A31p
2654 can only be A31p
2373 can represent T40/p, T41/p and T42/p. The same goes for 2374, 2378 and 2379...
On the opposite end of the spectrum, T43 can be 18xx (integrated GPU) or 26xx (ATi GPU)...
And the stuff got even more complicated with T6x series and its counterparts...
The very same song that I have quoted in my signature also says : "Confusion will be my epitaph..."

T2x can be both 2647 and 2648
And I'm sure there are a whole lot more variants.
If someone needs help with a 390-LOU, I (and many others) would have a hard time looking up the specs, whereas a 2626-LOU is only one click away!
Just my $0.02

I just realize that you never got an answer to your question.
In Windows, you can make a drive 'shared', perhaps a Mac has something similar?
On my PC I have one drive declared as 'shared'. The other PCs/laptops on the home network can all see this drive and load/retrieve files onto/from it. Sort of a mini-server for the rest of the family.
Alternative: a NAS-drive

@aarontring: on topic: I'm still running tiger but Leopard has something equal: in System Preferences, select "Sharing". There you can edit the computer name and enable Windows Sharing. I think I didn't need to enter the workgroup to connect.
If I'm right Leopard has more possibilities to configure sharing but besides the previously mentioned method I also use an application that puts itself into the System Preferences too called SharePoints and it has been working great for me.
The other way around, I can connect to windows shares just hitting cmd + K in the finder and entering "smb://PcNameOrIp/ShareName".

Oddly, the original impetus for my finding a solution to the problem presented itself with much forehead slapping. I was trying to get music from her old computer to her new Mac, which I hadn't realized she'd already done using her iPod. Say it with me, now: "DUH!"
I'd still like to work it out, and I will give the last two suggestions a looksee, because there are still quite a few picture files she wasn't to move. I never much saw the point in burning to a CD for a one-shot transfer, and I still would like her to be able to access the "network" music...
