I need alternative to an Ipod

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Tue Jun 03, 2008 8:34 pm

Okay so I like ipod shuffle for being small and easily attachable. But I don't like iTunes... As a matter of fact why do I need software to synchronize music??? I'd rather synchronize music manual using windows explorer, of course this is not easily done with ipods.
So I need an ipod shuffle killer with the following options:
1. small and easily attachable
2. music can be synchronized using explorer (just like a USB drive)
3. i'd like to have a radio
4. i'd like to have a small screen (this is not required)
5. lightweight
6. again, very small, as small as ipod suffle or close to its size

this would be primarily my work out music player. any suggestions?
what do you guys use for a work out?

In the next forty minutes you could jump on this:
http://sellout.woot.com/Default.aspx?Wo ... 87151a19c3

$20 for 2GB, FM radio, voice recording, and a color screen.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em

I'm not aware of anything approaching the size of an Apple Shuffle and has a built-in radio. Even if the radio feature can be forgotten, then I'd say you are still looking at something in the way of a USB thumb drive format; something that has a standard A-type USB plug and which looks like an external disk drive to Windows so you can use Explorer to transfer .MP3 files.

I found these, which might fit your requirements for simple file transfers and small size:

Itunes is for music management for playlists, buying songs, and locking you down with drm. Not so much anymore, but I'd rather not have that on my computer, especially the way they cram quicktime and safari down my throat too.

There ARE alternatives; There's a few sansa players (which I don't think have a radio), there's an onslaught of creative players (which also don't have radio), and sony makes a few, although they're not as small.

Of course you can use this tool click with a shuffle, and never have to look at itunes.

the shuffle-like player looks interesting. However I don't see any company name or even actual product name. you think this is legit player?

Probably is legit seeing as it's from a Yahoo storefront. You might also consider this:

Coby MP-C582
http://www.amazon.com/Coby-MP-C582-Clip ... B000PIVVU0
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productD ... oid=192620

It IS a clip, appears to load .MP3 files as easy as transferring files to a flash drive, but doesn't have a radio.

Note that I don't have any personal experience with any of these .MP3 players I've found. My choice is a Rio Forge 512MB, loaded with a 2GB SD card. It has an FM radio, can record from the radio, has a fairly detailed display, looks like two flash drives to Windows (built-in 512MB is one drive; the SD card is another), uses a standard AAA battery (alkaline or NiMh). However, it is a little bulky, doesn't have a built-in clip (the armband is kind of useless), needs a standard type-A to type-B USB cable, is no longer offered for sale (new) and has a tendency to break one of the volume control buttons if it's dropped on that corner (I buy damaged units off of eBay and fix them).

There are a TON of iTunes alternative synchronization options. Time to test your Google-fu.

That is one of the best websites for this kind of thing, hell even the name I love :D .

I have a Sansa E250 and I love it, it's small, 2gb + micro sd card slot = win.

Coupled with my sennheiser mx-75's it's good times.

I ended up getting this one:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productD ... oid=192620
it was only $17.99, the design is simple and uncluttered. the buttons are not loose (unlike zune) and no need for iTunes or any other software to sync my music. Size wise it is also very similar to an ipod shuffle.
thanks everyone!
now I only need cheap and good ear phones...

- understand that battery life is only 5hours
- the sound quality is okay but probably not as good as expansive players
- the up side is that you can leave it in your car and you don't have to worry about anybody stealing it
- it is a perfect device for running imo

I know you already bought one, but I have an older iRiver 795; only has 512MB but also has an FM radio and voice recorder and the voice recorder can record from the radio. It also plays .wma which is the format I rip music to on this player. The sound is fantastic, even with a cheap pair of Sony earbuds.

How about one of the smaller 8GB Sony Walkmans with noise cancelling? It is not quite as small as what you are looking for, but has the best sound of all of the PMPs I have ever listened to. Now, if I could just convince iTunes that it's an iPod...

I agree with Purcy, iRiver is your best choice.
I bought an iRiver H10 with 5GB HD for my daughter.
It can run BIG circles around any iPod sound-wise, and probably also quality-wise. Has FM radio, records from radio, dictaphone function, plays MP3, WMA and quite a few others. Even plays small avi's I think. Rechargeable battery, one load good for ca. 8-10 hours.
Very hard to beat, especially considering I bought it used for €40.-, sent it to the factory for an overhaul, where they replaced nearly all the 'guts' for free!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Try the Sansa Clip. It's about the same size as the ipod shuffle. It is UMS, which means you can just drag and drop musics files onto it. It sounds very good, superior to the ipod shuffle according to reviews.

It has EVERY SINGLE FEATURE that you ask for.
