#1 Post by mattbiernat » Fri Jun 06, 2008 6:24 pm

don't get me wrong, I love VLC player, i don't have to download extra codec and it plays almost everything that I throw at it. but i just get frustrated, cause it keeps on crushing on me all the time. anybody else experienced that problem?

I never had any problems with VLC until 2 nights ago when I tried to play a simple .avi video and it stuttered the entire time. I re-opened the file in Media Player Classic and it played fine. But I'm not giving up on it, because I do like it best of all the players.

EDIT: I just checked the videolan.org website and they released an update ver 0.8.6h just today. I'm installing the update.

how about playing several flv files consecutively? mine VLC crashes almost 70% of the time. i've tried different kind of flv files, i've also tried mp3 files and other music formats. i still love that player as well, im hoping thou that by version 1.0 it will be 99% stable.

No, no problems playing .flv files, even several in a row. Did you take the update?

VLC crashed too often for me on Windows, on Linux however it's hard to beat.

I've been having some issues with VLC as well. I'm using openSuSE 11.0 so that may be related. I've had movies crash and the Firefox plugin has been especially bad. I've still got it installed, but so far MPlayer/SMPlayer has been running great for me. Before I completely blew Windows away it was working great for me, but that was over a year ago. Anyone know if there were any recent major updates?

Using Vista x64 Ultimate with no problems with VLC. I don't use it for MP3s, but I use it for just about everything else (even .mov so I don't have do download annoying apple software)

No complaints here. Great for HD files too (especially .mkv)

yeah I use portable version of MPlayer as a back up. There are few file formats that VLC doesn't handle well that MPlayer plays with no problems. Too bad thou, that I cant seem to find one player that I like that does everything.

Never had problem with VLC player on Windows XP. But keep it updated and don't allow to run with Administrator privileges of course (possible buffer overflow vulnerabilities)

Yes, I think it's unstable. I have had all sorts of problems with it, but I still use it all the time for the things it does do well.

Problems include... it can use a tremendous amount of resources. I have some files that came from HD TV signals and when I play them, I get 90% + CPU usage and a fairly low frame rate. This is with the computer in my sig, which has plenty of muscle. I play the same files on WMP and CPU usage is less than 10% and it plays perfectly.

If I try to edit a file by extracting out a portion (by running time), I can put in the same start and stop time, and the resulting file will be slightly different each time. Also, if I pick a start time any later than 20 sec into the video stream, VLC just sits and will not do anything.

And there are fairly frequent crashes for no apparent reason.

I've just tried H.264 720p MOV trailer. CPU usage was from 5% to 35% approx 15%, 35 MB virtual memory size.

I was using VLC player till I discovered Media Player Classic. VLC does consume more resources than MPC, but never did I find it unstable.

i know. i use both. the problem with MPC is that it doesnt play as wide range of files as VLC does.

VLC player is good compare to other video player's. It supports heaps of codec's.

But if recodeing/encoding of a video is done in a improper way, VLC gives error in that case.

If encoding/Recoding of the video is done properly, VLC doesnt give any problem.

I used to use VLC, then I discovered KMPlayer, it's available for download on Softpedia. Never go back, best standalone media player I have ever used. Period.

it will not start....
i've selected option to have it play .avi, .flv, .wmv, etc files. however when i click on any of those media files, it will not start.
and ideas?

Hmm, that's really weird, I can start it just fine. Are you using the installer version or the standalone version?
I'm using the installer version, and it works fine.

okay im using installer version.
i got it fixed by running registry mechanic and rebooting my system.
now there is one more question i got...
i'd like play videos and have them repeat infinitely . that is not a problem with the "repeat" option, however when i try to zoom on the video - to let's say - "double size," the video will play until it's done, then it will go back to original size and then repeat. and this is a huge problem for me because the video doesn't retain the size i asked it to retain.

yeah, i finally got everything going. i've been testing it for 2 days and i like it so far. maybe if i find no problems with it, after 2 weeks i will get rid of VLC. MPC is a keeper thou, as it is tiny and stand alone application that has never failed me. thank you guys for your suggestion about this new media player, i've been looking for some VLC alternative for a very long time.
