Please recommend a FTP product...

I was using Ipswitch WS_FTP (for WIN95) on my old Dell machine. Now, Ipswitch only offers 30 day trial version (or free after signing up for a service called "Trialpay").

I just continue to use the old version of WS_FTP. The newer versions add no functionality, just a lot of extra non-essential features. Strangely I often find that the old free version of software products fit my needs better than the current pay for versions. If it was the other way around I would pay for the streamlined version and skip the feature bloated free version. Luckily it is not the other way around.

Two things you gotta do. Archive a copy of the old version. Pray that it continues to work on your new hardware and operation system.

Have not tried any of the ones in the OP's list.

I use FTP Commander, but an older version (7.40). It does everything I need it to do but has one minor bug; it sometimes deposits a file named "answer.txt" in your FTP home directory. It has a Windows Explorer-like dual-pane view (your computer and the FTP site). You basically click on the file(s) you want to transfer and click one of two arrow buttons which signifies the direction (upload or download). You can create and delete directories, delete files, rename them, etc. You can also launch a file stored on your computer by highlighting the file and clicking the "Run" icon or you can edit the file by clicking the "View" icon. Handy for editing HTML files with Notepad and then immediately previewing the content and/or uploading the file to your FTP site. Best of all, it's free .

2nd recommendation for FileZilla. It is always being updated and serves both basic, introductory needs as well as advanced, professional needs.

I'm using a way old, and still perfect-for-my-uses version of WS_FTP. I (heart) John Junod, several of his original apps are still indispensible (e.g. WS Ping Pack Pro).

CuteFTP has been recommended to me by those who know. Still around somewhere?

There's a guy in Germany (?) who does a fantastic file manager, with a free version for PocketPC, called Total Commander, if he's got an FTP client, I'd trust him to do it right.

Oh, I checked, not only does he have a new version for my antique PPc, but his app has a built-in FTP client. Kewl! I'd try it, see if it works for you. I like the guy, and have Paypaled him $ his app is so useful and reliable.

I haven't used Cute FTP recently, but I used to use it a lot a couple years back and it worked very well. Firezilla is another great one.

As a third option, I currently use Get Right as both an FTP client and download manager. It has a built in browser for going through file directories, and any files you want can be added to the download list. It's shareware, but 98% of the functions run and all you get is an occasional reminder window. If you want to buy it, it's fairly inexpensive.

I've been using SmartFTP (www.smartftp.com) without problems for a number of years. The rare times I've had problems or queries, the designers have been amazingly responsive in the public support forums.

It is free for non-commercial use. Works for me with both the XP and the Vista machines.

Another vote for Filezilla. I use it on a regular basis for transferring large and sometimes hundreds of files while running Filezilla client on Windows and servers on Solaris and Linux OS.

As a web designer I use Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional.
For quick-and-dirty work I also quite often use the built-in FTP function of VComm's PowerDesk.

My pick as well. I could argue I don't need all the functionality, but I like the overall feature set, purchased a license some years back, and now just pay maintenance to keep the licensing current.

firefox has fireftp add-on which is enough for download and upload files/directories.
