Vista OEM# question...

#1 Post by SaberX » Sun Jun 15, 2008 6:09 pm

Not sure that this is a Vista question or more of Microsoft(Vista and XP).
But I with the Dell Laptop(see sig) i have Vista Home Pre installed. It was a new copy of Vista and my Dell was the first laptop it was installed on and activated with.100% with all updates. No problems at all.
BUT now i sold the Dell laptop and the buyer dident want Vista.
So i have the CD here with the COA# to go with it(only used 1 time with my Dell).
SO will i have any problems installing this Vista on another system.?Will it activate on another system?
I have herd that when a OS like Vista and XP gets activated on a system you cant install it on another system.

I'm serching on microsoft's site now but thought i would ask here too....

Thanks
Bill

If you have the COA , then you can just download a copy of Vista and use that..(Moderator edit) We do not discuss software cracking here. Be sure it does not happen again..

Since you have the COA, it's technically not illegal, but it does go against the Vista EULA. Good thing Microsoft isn't in charge of making laws (although the guys who are now aren't much better ;) )

Worst case, you install and it asks you to call. They ask you how many computers it is installed on (We all know the answer to that) and what kind of copy it is. (OEM or retail) I've had to do it with XP before and it's a pretty easy phone call. They don't ask for much info.
Cell phones are my specialty. Got questions? Ask away.

You cannot move an OEM license to a different machine and stay within licensing restrictions. ... JDH
