anybody still uses IE6?

#1 Post by mattbiernat » Tue Jun 17, 2008 12:27 pm

I have converted from IE6 to IE7 a year ago or so. I seemed to be happy for a while... Recently however, I switched back to IE6 and I like it more for being lightweight, less bloated with better organized menus and aesthetically more appealing. It also tends to freeze less than IE7 and the start up time is shorter for me as well. Anybody else still uses IE6 or went back to using it? Why couldn't Microsoft simply add tab browsing to IE6 without changing everything about it?

While 99.9% of my browsing is done through Firefox, I still sometimes have to use IE and when I do I use IE6 (pretty much for the same reasons you do).

I agree. Tabbed browsing was what initially drew me to Firefox and now I can't imagine going without it. The tabbed interface in IE7 just makes me cringe. I get by with IE6 because usually I only need to open one page (like anything related to a Windows update).

Same here, I use Firefox mainly but I never did upgrade to IE7. My husband's computer has IE7 and I don't care for it.

Same here, too. I only upgrade software when forced to. Unless older versions have bugs or known problems, I tend to stick with them since they generally have less bloat.

I stuck with IE7 myself, although I have IE6 on a specific client machine for a specific purpose. I don't notice much difference, although I added the Tools menu bar (I need it) and set Tabs to allow everything to close at once (bites me occassionally). Still, IE7 is nice and fast for me and does not freeze at all. ... JDH

It's been a few months since I checked, but most business enterprise-wide applications using a browser still need IE6, and are often not supported on IE7.

I agree on the tabbed browsing in IE7. It is just different than in Firefox. It took me a while to start using tabbed browsing when the feature was available in FF.

I prefer IE6 - and the only thing I really use it for is ftp and sites that require it.

I use IE6 for specific sites until IE7 works in Linux.

I haven't found anything that won't work with IE7 now. The one application I spoke of is a Java issue, and I have just been to lazy to update the machine to IE7. The banking application in question requires an old version of Java but will work with IE7. ... JDH

Still on IE 6, although I really use it once in a blue, being more of a Firefox person myself...and too lazy to update as well...

Is there no security related issues of using IE6 under windows?

Using Opera 9.5, then Firefox 3 if site won't load, then IE7 if nothing else works .... :X

how about start up times?
did you guys notice any difference in the amount of time it takes to start IE6 versus IE7. for me IE6 starts instantly while IE7 takes 3-5 seconds to load... maybe there is IE7 specific spyware or something.... but i do use windows defender, spybot ad spyware blaster...

No, why ? I use IE7 everywhere with no issues. As for startup time, it is less than one second. But I don't use any anti-everything software thingy. I prefer real security based on limited user account privileges and allowing reliable addons only.

well i don't have XP to compare anymore but on Vista it (IE7) starts up just as fast (superfetch more than likely). My HDD LED doesn't even blink when i click the icon. :)

I rather IE7 now, i use IE6 at my new job and man i keep wanting to upgrade that thing. :) I'll upgrade it once they add the IT stuff to my job description which should be soon :) - a nice lil pay raise too.

IE7 + IE7Pro is my choice (it gives you better tab manegement, session restore, download manager  ).... I don't use IE6 anymore at all. Startup IE6 vs IE7 is the same for me. Don't have any problems...

I had it installed for a while, but I found it to be useless (it detects changes very good, but it crashes/fails when you try to block something), it also takes time to get up and running.... I replaced it with Commodo Firewall Pro v3....
