Acronis True Image is also forwards compatible
Recently my Acronis True Image V9 did not function properly anymore.
I needed a backup/restore in a hurry, so I hunted around on eBay, found TI V10 for $8.75 incl. shipping, but needed the program immediately.
So I also downloaded TI V11 trial, and did my business with that.
When my V10 arrived, I uninstalled V11, as I didn't want to keep V11 because of the various issues.
To my pleasant surprise, V10 could also restore the backups made with V11.
Good stuff!

I've using True Image for quite some time. I've found if you have a Seagate Drive, which I do in all my machines, you can get a free download of Seagate's DiscWizard which is essentially TrueImage. I believe it is version 10. It works great on all my machines. I prefer it to Rescue and Recovery. I like to do a clean install with just the drivers and ThinkVantage tools I use along with the latest service pack, then make an image. I do a full install and make another image. I can put back either in about five minutes.

I know that, but as I work with a variety of HD brands, that are imaged from a PC, a full V10 is necessary.
Ever since I switched from Drive Image, after it was bought and screwed up by Symantec, I've used Acronis True Image and never looked back.
