ebay's "new search experience"... POLL

#1 Post by makai » Sat Aug 16, 2008 12:33 pm

Well, I just couldn't stand it any longer, so I emailed ebay. I doubt very much anything will get done, but at least I had my say! There are many more things I dislike about this "new search experience", but my email covered my main gripes. I know I can opt out, but doing so doesn't refresh the page I'm on, rather it takes me to the home page where I have to do my search all over again! :banghead:
Me thinks the same person who created Vista and Office 2007 works for ebay!!!

Here's what I sent...
Can I "opt out" of your new search like... "permanently"!
Better yet, can you just get rid of it?!?!?!
It's obvious from the forum that many, many, many people dislike the new
search "experience". The number of clicks on your "opt out" button
should tell you that people "experienced" with ebay don't like the way
the new seach option is presented.

It's a pain to navigate, and what was once very obvious is now hidden
somewhere else on the page. Are you trying to emulate Microsoft??? (You
know, that's the ultimate insult and shouldn't be taken lightly!)
Believe me, pretty does not translate to "user friendly"!

Take for instance the Buy it Now tab that used to be at the top of the
page. All I had to do was click on the Buy it now tab and everything
with BIN was listed. Now I first have to scroll down the page about a
third of the way to find the BIN display option. To say the least, it's
aggravating to have to scroll down the page just to do this.
Take a hint from Firefox and put the tabs back in at the top of the
page!

Next is the way I'm able to choose options from the left column. It
used to be so easy to choose options all at once. Now... the page needs
to refresh with every single option selection before I can even choose
another option. What's with that??? Talk about slowing something down
to near un-usability!

People want speed. They want to accomplish their searches fast. They
don't want pretty. They don't want to have to refresh the page with
every single option choice... EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!

If you insist on keeping this "new experience" alive, at least put the
tabs back up!

Yup, Firefox over IE anytime... old ebay search over new search... always!
Trust me, it's to the point where ebay is now so much more of a
hassle to use. I'll still use it, but I'm definitely not enjoying it!

Get a clue guys and gals!!!

Sign me... Just "one" of your customers!

Apologies to everyone... end of my rant!!!

i'm confused. search looks the same to me. at least as recently as a few minutes ago.

"Take for instance the Buy it Now tab that used to be at the top of the page. All I had to do was click on the Buy it now tab and everything with BIN was listed."
still right at the top for me. firefox 3.0.1

"Next is the way I'm able to choose options from the left column. It used to be so easy to choose options all at once. Now... the page needs to refresh with every single option selection before I can even choose another option."
not here. still can select multiple checkboxes without the page auto-refreshing, and then press 'show items'.

sorry you're having issues...

sarbin... what you're seeing is the "old" search function. If you want to see the new one, just click on the "try it now" link on the right side of the page.

ebay is trying to make users use the new search function and will intermittantly load the new search page when users first get there. The new search page may or may not show up every time you visit ebay, however, it will inevitably show up if you go there often enough.

i'm there quite a bit (multiple times daily) and haven't seen it yet. no 'try it now' link visible anywhere i've looked, either. can you provide a page link?

If you look directly right of the tabs you'll see the link... it's in the same row. But anyways, here's a T41 seach using the new search experience...

ok... looking at your link loaded the new style. clicking 'opt out' switched it back for me and it seems to be holding the setting between sessions. cookie, maybe?

Yes, cookies will hold whatever search option you choose... until you delete your cookies. If you don't have cookies enabled and you happen to enter the new search page, then try to opt out, you can't do it until you enable cookies.

As stated, the new search will pop up whenever it feels like it, so you won't see it all the time... you have no control over this. However, its a real pain when it does because you have to opt out if you don't want to use it, and then you have to redo your search. A pain to say the least!

I wish ebay would change a few things and then it would be ok. I guess it would then just be a prettier "old" search page if they did.

well... it could be worse. ebay could've offered no opt-out at all. it may get to that anyway.

peace, out.

I agree the new display of the search results is annoying. Worse, if I use a saved search, the opt out does not work; i.e., opt out, it sends me to the home page, go back to favorite searches, click on search, same new display of results as before; Very annoying.

I just don't understand why ebay would sacrifice usability for... sheesh, I can't even describe it... it's so messed up! :|

Maybe I should have made this a poll. Can I still do that?

I guess I can... I added the Poll!

Hey!!!! Did anyone notice when the Buy it Now and other tabs were put back up at the top (in the new search experience window)? Also, there are down arrows on the left screen menu to make selecting options quicker. The page still has to refresh with each selection, but at least some things are back!!! Thank you ebay... much easier now! Not perfect, but much better!!!

For an exerienced eBayer, it's awful. It just slows you down a lot. When it appears, it make me want to quit eBay.

Perhaps for someone new to eBay, it would be helpful, because it's easy to navigate, but takes more clicks and it's slow.

Yah, I agree! It's still dang slow! My reference to Microsoft was no joke! It really makes you wonder...

I haven't used e-bay in a long time, just to check pricing.

It's their paypal and other policies that [censored] me off and cost them a customer.

For some reason e-bay is not content with leaving well enough alone.

the new search is miserable. I dislike it very much. It has loaded before, but it loaded the other day and i quickly opted out. The worst part i think was the "My Ebay" summary page. Ebay continues to amaze me.

I'm glad someone else feels my pain.

I love the fact that my search results are sorted by "Best Match" which is effectively worthless to me.

I also love that when I search for a cell phone, it gives me 20 different options for which kind of accessory I'm looking for. This might be helpful if I were actually searching for an accessory, but usually I'm not.

The option to search for pre-filled phone information has about a 30% success rate, mainly because the part numbers they are listed under are nothing like the model number itself.

Bah, now I'm ranting too.

+1 for the new layout being a pain.
Cell phones are my specialty. Got questions? Ask away.

you can change your preferences to have it default to "ending soonest" or whichever you prefer. This isn't a new problem, but i hate that if i go to ebay motors and try to go back to My Ebay, it keeps it in My Ebay motors not the general Ebay category. I have to go back to Ebay home and than My Ebay again to kinda reset it. It might not be a pain to some, but if your bidding on something that isn't motors related it wont show up in your bidding query if your in the motors section.

Ugh I really hate the new search function AND the My Ebay BETA, not only is it hard to use it is really, painfully, slow since I am on a 21kb. internet connection.

I could opt out but that just wastes more time...of course searching would be easier, but....
