Fujitsu tries to capture e-Reader UMPC market: U2010 (PIC)

#1 Post by milstein » Tue Sep 02, 2008 6:50 pm

I am getting quite excited about this product by Fujitsu: U2010 (Asia) / U820 (US) / LOOX U (Japan)

Google translation

Armed with:
- Intel Atom
- Convertible form factor, a trackpoint, & a 6-row (thumb?) keyboard
- ultra-fine outdoor viewable display 1280x800 at 5.6"
- ~600 gram
- 5 hours and up to 11.1 hours of battery life
- (potentially) GPS

It will even be a more powerful killer in the e-Reader market when later on Fujitsu put their e-Paper/e-Ink technology into this little gem - giving them even longer and more robust battery life.

Mod edit: The pic size is 51.02 kb, just above the forum limit of 50 kb (and the girl is cute) so I am letting the inline pic stay. Modified thread title a bit, and added PIC warning. Also changed google translate url to a link to prevent scrolling --

Prices start at 123,800 yen, which a straight conversion indicates is about $1125.
It seems rather expensive.

For a device for reading e-books, there are more affordable devices. One is the Kindle from Amazon. Another is from Sony. Another is Beekan. (IIRC on the name). All of which is more affordable than the one from Fuji. 8)

Yes, I am anticipating the era of e-paper to come too
From a computer user point of view, Kindle (amazon) and Reader (sony) are being too slow at their refresh rate for the impatient users, have to wait for 1 second for every page flip.

They have the video e-paper technology that can refresh at a rate of 24 fps, but that is still at the prototype stage.

And my thinking is that, the future electronic reader gadgets probably have to be as versatile as this Fujitsu U820.
