Firefox + AVG Safe Search 8 = crash

#1 Post by rkawakami » Sun Sep 07, 2008 7:06 pm

Spend a good part of yesterday and today trying to figure out a problem with a newly restored SXGA+ A30. A fresh install of XP w/SP2 (I'm still on the fence with SP3) and all my usual OS tweaks and installs, with the addition of Google Chrome. During some surfing with Firefox 3, I kept getting random application errors citing "msvcr80.dll". I downgraded to FF 2.0.0.16 and still the errors popped up. Sometimes it would be when launching a new page. At other times, when the page was almost fully loaded. Going to the same sites with Chrome did not generate any errors. I uninstalled/installed Java, Flash, Shockwave; even went as far as trying new video drivers and blocking most ad sites with my hosts file, thinking that some of the multimedia ads was the cause. I finally found a couple of reports that the AVG Safe Search extension for Firefox was thought to be the problem. I found that it was enabled in FF3 so I disabled it. So far, no more errors.

On a totally unrelated note... the thing I miss in Chrome is scrolling with the middle button. I disable the scrolling function for the Trackpoint in the Mouse Properties window since it's too jerky for me. What I then get is the double-headed, round, proportional speed scroll icon when clicking the middle button in long pages. Using the middle button to launch new tabs and scroll around in FF is just second nature so I'm waiting to see if it's possible to do that in Chrome.

I've seen that filename before (msvcr80.dll). Norton WinDoctor used to erroneously report an error on that file when doing a scan.

AFAIK, that file is used in the Visual C++ Redistributable Package, used by .NET, Quicken, and Adobe.

Are you up to date with all the .NET updates?

For this particular system I don't believe that I have any .NET framework packages installed. The OS was installed from an IBM recovery disk set and only SP2 run on it. It does not appear in the Add/Remove Program wizard.

Is there any particular/compelling reason why I should install it?

BTW, the msvcr80.dll file does exist in one of the subdirectories of c:\windows\WinSxS. Moving it into c:\windows\system32 (where I thought it might do good) didn't help.

See this previous post of mine for a little more info.

Here is another thread that may be of interest, since a Visual C++ Redistributable update includes msvcr80.dll.

I hope you're fixed up for good now Ray. I had to install .net Framework 2.0 when I tried to install a video file converter program; my T23 did not have it installed either  I upgraded to FF3 last week but ended up re-installing the 2.0.0.16 again because of some quirks.

Oh, and I dumped AVG 8 last week, I seemed to be having update issues with it; I'm using the most current Avast, it seems to be good.

Well, I'm only using the A30 right now in order to check out all of the hardware in it. I probably won't be needing to install any .NET stuff. I think that there's only one program I've downloaded recently that required the .NET Framework; can't remember what it is but it could have been something related to video processing.

I have only started using FF3 for a couple of weeks; my usual systems are still running 2.0.0.16. Same for AVG - most of them are 7.5, only a couple have been updated to 8.0. I haven't noticed any real slowdowns with it or update issues (so far --> knock on wood). In fact, at the moment I'm downloading AVG 8 into a T23 that I'm testing out. Will probably also update Firefox to version 3 and see what happens. After turning off the Safe Search extension I never got any of those msvcr80.dll errors.

Hey Ray, they stopped the virus definition updates for vers 7.5 on aug 31. I'm glad to hear that error issue has resolved.

Just (manually) updated this system's AVG 7.5 with database version 270.6.19/1659, released today. Yesterday it did auto-update on its own. AVG has changed their end-of-life support date a couple of times. I think now it's sometime in December. I'll probably go ahead and update to 8.0 on all the systems I have as I haven't seen any problems (Safe Search, excepted) with it.
