Parts crossreference between R4x/R5x series and T4x series?

#1 Post by iluvtruenos » Fri Sep 12, 2008 11:19 pm

What parts can be replaced?

Most importantly keyboards, bezels, what else?

Memory, HDD, and wifi are universal, so that goes too.

What about the optical drives?

Keyboards are interchangeable within the machines of the same LCD size. Palmrests are not.

Slim media drives from T4x units will work in R5x machines, leaving a little bit of space around them, but the Enhanced drives from R5x won't fit in a T4x.

HDD covers are different.

LCDs are swappable.

Hope this helps.

All of this applies only on a T4/R5 level, R4x units are a whole different ballgame and apart from RAM and HDD share nothing with the rest of the crew...

Systemboards are swappable as well, as are RAM, CPU's, hard drives, AC Adapters, and docks. R52's and T43's are slightly different animals from the rest as far as CPU's and RAM parts, so pay attention there. They have a 533Mhz Front side bus, vs. 400Mhz.

Recenty I bought T43 as a bargain. Everything is working just fine, but the machine obviously has fallen to hard surface and/or has been bent, because base cover and one corner is cracked. Also the magnesium frame where screen hinges are attached is slightly warped therefore battery is a bit loose and cranky.
I have a chance replace base cover and frame to same parts from T40. I've done little googling and realize that all T4x are basically same. Differences come within machine configuration.
My question is: will those parts from T40 fit directly to T43? Both laptops are 14". T43 is 1871-f1g, T40 model type is unknown to me. I'd like to get my understandment confirmed by somebody who have experiences in Thinkpad stuff or any additional information what "suprises" may come.

Yes, everything will physically fit, but you have to pay attention to the differences I mentioned in the post before yours. You cannot use a T40's RAM or CPU in a T43. If you keep all the internal parts the same but replace the base only, then there are no issues.

I was concerned especially about that frame inside the machine. Maybe there's minor changes between those two models etc. But if they are physically same, then I'll just go for it.
