what is going to be your next laptop
with so many people dissatisfied with the new wave of lenovo laptops I am wondering how many are considering something else.

A VERY tough call...
I voted for Panasonic, but that's only if they keep the 4:3 format...and that's when the day comes that I need a new business laptop, which doesn't look like it's going to be any time soon, so things may change by then...
In the meantime, I'm buying older ThinkPads that I like, both for my mini-collection and regular daily use.

My intention is for the next one to be a HP. The solid build quality and excellent specs of my nw8240 have made me very willing to add another to my stable, most likely a nc2400. I'm not disillusioned with TPs or anything, just opening myself to trying out different machines with similar specs to the best that IBM/Lenovo hado to offer a couple of years back.

I'll probably stay with refurbished IBM models. They deliver most important components for me - display and keyboard which Lenovo has "finally" ruined at all.
I was thinking of X200 with SSD but I'm rather disappointed with new X series (too big, ugly display bezel, possible keyboard flex, no DVI/DisplayPort). I no longer consider bigger models because of display quality decline in general.

if your X32 was manufactured after may 2005 then it will have a lenovo logo on the bottom along with an IBM one. either way, foxconn would have built it no matter whose name is on the sticker.Harryc wrote:I voted 'other', because my next laptop will be an IBM Thinkpad X32 arriving this week. Lenovo didn't build it.
my next thinkpad (technically a lenovo one) will be homemade. it's about 80% complete.

Terrible TN screens, off-centered displays, wide LCD bezels, overall ugliness, certain models overpriced, quality of other brands catching up, etc. etc. I voted for "Dell" and hope that my next laptop will be the Latitude E4200. I actually don't know whether its screen will be good, but at least I like its physical appearance and super light weight (2.2 lb!). And Dell has been making very solid Latitudes in the last two years, so I believe the build quality will be at least decent. By contrast, IBM and Lenovo still haven't introduced a single ultraportable Thinkpad that meets my requirements, with the pre-X300 X-series' having only XGA resolution being the worst problem.j-dawg wrote:Dunno what people are complaining about.

I won't be needing another laptop in foreseeable future. I guess that's "other".
edit: I guess I should clarify that "foreseeable future" ends in April 2010 for me. Lots of things can change when it comes to both my needs and laptop manufacturers until then.

I think I fall in love with the new X200, so I vote for Lenovo. X200 seems to be a perfect laptop for me. I still stick with ThinkPad as long as it has the trackpoint and the colored Thinkpad buttons.
I hope IBM will buy its PC&laptop division back from Lenovo so that we will be able to choose IBM in the next vote

1. Terrible screens - My T61p has a high resolution screen that is somewhat softer and less crisp than my T41 1024x768 screen. Not quite as good, but not "terrible" by any stretch.
2. Off-centred display - the machine is black; I don't see it; and I did not even notice it until it was pointed out. With respect, it has nothing to do with using the machine and impairs nothing.
3. Wide bezels - Roughly the same as my T41 other than the slight off-centred part. What wide bezels? Where? What machine?
4. Overall ugliness - Many of us like the looks of the venerable black ThinkPad series. No one ever called my T41 ugly. And my T61 so resembles my T41 that I picked it up and packed it in my briefcase for the next days work. I noticed and changed, but if it is so close to my earlier T, what is ugly about it.?
I guess we are just coming from different vantage points.

Obviously. Please reread the OP's first post, which explains that this thread is about "the new wave of lenovo laptops", meaning the X300 and later models. Your T61p is excluded from this discussion, not to mention your T41 which is neither part of the "new wave" nor a Lenovo laptop!jdhurst wrote:I guess we are just coming from different vantage points.

maybe i should be more clear here. my intent regarding lenovo is for the new laptops (t400,200,300 etc...), hence I said new wave.
interesting results so far, almost 40% of people in the thinkpad forum are at least considering something other than lenovo (lets see if we can get more votes in...).
myself i am going to be either waiting for a better lenovo ultraportable or go with the dell. so far my T60 is only 2 years old.

I like Lenovo
I like Lenovo. When my Thinkpad T23 fails (in the future), I will geta Lenovo Idea pad S10. I like the smallness of it.

Thanks for the info and for the NBR link in your other thread. The X200s is no doubt the best ultraportable Thinkpad ever: only 2.47 lb, widescreen (perfect for 12.1"), and 1440x900. But I still prefer the Latitude E4200, because it's even lighter, has a touchpad, looks prettier, and after owning 40+ Thinkpads, I want to try something different. And I bet the 12.1" 1440x900 screen will sooner or later be used by other manufacturers besides Lenovo, i.e. when I buy the E4200 about a year from now, it'll probably have this higher-res option.Puppy wrote:First NBR preview article about X200s states there will be 12" WXGA+ LED resolution option.

I really don't know what else to offer. Check to see if your local dump has an electronics drop off area. Just don't weigh out heavier than you were when you went in. I actually did that once, and a few eyebrows were raised.

I well realize some persons prefer wide screens for their own reasons. I prefer the 4:3 aspect ratio, and bought one of the last T61p's with 4:3 screen earlier this year. I am glad I did. ... JDHRalf Hutter wrote:I voted "other".
My next one will be another IBM T4x series. I can't consider any of today's notebooks because of the stupid "wide screen" junk that they're foisting on us. Long live SXGA+
