(It was my understanding that a marriage license is really more of a "registration" with a possible check against polygamy. I don't exactly have much experience when it comes to getting married, though, so I could be entirely wrong.)

pitch it from the point of "illegals" driving and committing crimes (my best guess at this late hour) - the public will push for drivers licenses

pitch it from the point of sovereignty and historical implementation of drivers licenses, and people will see it in a different light.

I could be wrong about that, too. I haven't researched the matter, and I'm just repeating what someone (whom I presumed researched it) told me. Does being in multiple "unlicensed marriages" meet the definition of polygamy, or is one a polygamist when he is in multiple licensed marriages, thereby tapping into "benefits" all around? I dunno. We would have to check state statutes and accompanying definitions. Remember, taking a spouse is not illegal. Some marriages are merely recognized by the state, while others are not.

i would just like to see a moderate law and not an outright ban. so that if you drive recklessly and use cell phone you get fined. if you drive safely and use a cell phone then no body cares...
same thing for drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking cigarettes on the beaches.
for some reason just because minority engages in irresponsible behavior the gov't believes that everybody is irresponsible.
(i've yet to see data which supports that second hand smoke on the beaches is harmful to your health)

If you don't like their rules, then turn in your driver's license and take some other form of transportation where a cell phone is allowed (such as the bus). You can't have it both ways.
who owns the roads - people or government?

if you research the topic of driver's licensing, you will find out that it began with driving licenses for chauffeurs and other commercial activity, which is perfectly fine, like any other professional license (barber, cosmetician comes first to mind)

Of course I don't like the rules, because they are phony rules to begin with

Oh and by the way, what about the right to travel? I know it is not explicitly written on bill of rights, but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. The founding fathers didn't even think about it at a time. Numerous court decisions ruled in favor of it as an inalienable right

You have the right to travel. There are buses, trains, planes, bicycles, walking, etc.

As for the "phony rules," I would point out that they do in fact exist. For better or worse, they are real. Not trying to offend you at all, but on some level I think your position on all this is that you want to be able to do whatever you want without any restrictions. This is not a realistic option if you live in any sort of community (in this case, I am referring to the US as a community).

Personally, the issue of legality of the whole thing is secondary IMO...in all honesty, I fail to understand WHY one would be texting or talking on the cell phone and driving at the same time...

Yes, I know zillions of people do it, but that in itself is not a good enough explanation...not for me anyway.

In both cars I have a holder for my Blackberry that allows me to see who's calling, and if I decide that I want to return the call (never do I pick up the phone) I'll pull over and talk. But that's me.

As for sitting in traffic, whatever happened to the radio...tapes...CDs...do we really have to talk/text when we're bored because we're moving at snail's pace... :?:

Same here. However, I prefer to give my business 100% attention by conducting it on the side of the road...

Yes we can, but I wouldn't say it is easy, and I wouldn't say that task results are the same when compared to "solo-tasking", they are worse to be more specific, yes, there are geniuses among us, but the chance that that is you or me is less than 1% (my estimate, probably even less). The task results for average people really depends on the nature of the task itself (try to read 2 books at the same time while talking to your friend about last week game and after write book reviews, and post results)....

point-in-time

I do agree, it is nearly impossible to multi-task any one human sense, at the same point-in-time.
To utilize sight and sound at the same point-in-time, occurs daily, across many venues.

They should add satnav to the list, just as dangerous, if not more so to be programming a satnav with a new destination whilst driving.

There is too many idiots on the road as it is, without them using something that distracts them even further.
