GoDaddy SQL server

#1 Post by spt60 » Sun Oct 12, 2008 8:56 pm

Hi,

I bought a domain and hosting-space with SQL Server on GoDaddy.com. My question is that if I write an application that runs on local pc for customers/users to keep their notes (each user has to signup and login), will it be possible for the app. to directly communicate/update the database?

Please keep in mind that the app. is on the local pc that connects to internet, not a web app.

I'm just wondering if this is possible due to the fact that only I'm authorized to access the GoDaddy SQL database; does it mean if I want to do so I have to have my own server and grant access to all registered customers/users?

Thank you :)

I'm currently taking a database class, so I think you can do this. You can set up access so only you can access the internals of the database and you clients can see it. The hard part will be getting the app to communicate to the server to access the database. If I can find more info, I'll let you know.

I don't have experience with godaddy specifically, so you'd have to check yourself to be sure, but SQL servers ran by web hosting companies are often set up to only accept connections from the company's own web servers. The idea is you're able to use the server for your web site, but not anything client-server.
