And so I am driving from California to Florida. What historical places/cities I should definitively visit on the way. I don't have more than a week for this trip so please give me only top 3 destinations

I'd suggest Albuquerque, Kansas City, and Savanah.

im taking freeway 10 which is the fastest way. Kansas City is kind of out of my way. well i have pretty much two choices.
Choice 1: southern route freeway 10 this will get me through phoenix, el paso, san antonio, huston, new orleans, baton rogue
Choice 2: a little bit norther route freeway 40 which will take me through santa fe, albuquerque, amarillo, oklahoma city, little rock, memphis, atlanta city

From California take I-40 east to Williams, AZ, then turn north on Hwy 64 to the Grand Canyon National Park. Continue on Hwy 64, then turn north on US 89 to US 160. Turn east on US 160 continuing through the Painted Desert, on through Monument Valley until just past Cortez, CO, where you will find Mesa Verde National Park.

Continue on US 160 to Pagosa Springs, CO, then turn south on US 64 follow to Taos, NM. From Taos, NM, follow US 64 until you reach I-25, just south of Raton, NM. Go north on I-25 about five miles, then turn east on US 64/87. Follow US 87 to Amarillo, TX. [Just south of Amarillo, off I-27 is Palo Duro Canyon State Park, which is a nice visit if you have the time.]

From Amarillo, TX follow I-40 east, through Memphis, TN and then through Nashville, TN. Lot of music history in Memphis and Nashville. In Nashville, TN, turn south on I-24 and continue through Atlanta, GA. In Atlanta and the surroundings (Stone Mountain) there should be plenty of things to do (although I am not so familiar with the Atlanta area).

From Atlanta, turn south on I-75 and continue on to Florida.

I went west on I-40 and back east on I-10 on a trip to the Grand Canyon years ago.

Choice 1 has a whole lot of nothing between El Paso and San Antonio, and Texas is one more big state to get across.
Choice 2: a little bit norther route freeway 40 which will take me through santa fe, albuquerque, amarillo, oklahoma city, little rock, memphis, atlanta city
Choice 2 is more scenic all along the way with far more variety.

Either one is interesting, but if your intent is to see different things, pick the I-40 route.

Just one mouse's opinion.

Try to get to Carlsbad Caverns National Park in south east New Mexico...Truly incredible. Like the Grand Canyon it is something you'll remember for the rest of your life

I'd also suggest taking the old, less traveled highways that go through every small town.

What is so great about Atlanta. I live in metro Atlanta and there seems to be nothing to do.

Well, I guess you could go to the World of Coke and the Aquarium, but there is nothing else to do in Atlanta IMO.

Grand Canyon is a good choice to visit. Defiantly travel on some of the older highways and see some small towns (I love traveling on old highways). I'm not quite sure where else to go, but I am making a list of all the places I would like to visit and do. If I could I would love to travel up the coast of California from San Diego up to southern Oregon.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I lived in the metro Atlanta area for about 16 years. There's lots of places to check out, although now that I think about it... Savannah may be a better place. Stone Mountain is always fun, climb up it etc 8) .

Atlanta's also got a lot of great restaurants out there too if you love food. I doubt you'll find a better collection of different types of cooking in the South. It seems perfect to stop in for a day or two and check out. For a week+ vacation? Then you're pushing it.
