I Will Never Buy A Dell

#1 Post by archer6 » Mon Nov 03, 2008 10:06 pm

I was just about to place my order for a Ubuntu powered Dell Mini 9. Now I have changed my mind and will never order another DELL....ever.

I came across this article about the new return process which is a total nightmare. An incredibly complex, system which seems to be created for the sole purpose of discouraging returns, or at the least making them very difficult, and extremely time consuming for the customer. The only reasoning I can see behind this change is the flagging profits at Dell as such that, by making returns so difficult, it will discourage many to follow through and actually obtain another unit, or a credit.

For a consumer, I would agree 100%.

For a business, I find their support to be excellent, and their newer machines are extremely reliable. I'd hesitate to ever buy an Inspiron, but I would definitely recommend an OptiPlex - in fact, I even own one (a 755) and it has been great.

As for their laptops, well...I think it's obvious where I stand on that based on the forum I am posting this on :D

++

Business class machines available with a free operating system, and good hardware and good support comes close to Lenovo. I've had pleasant experiences on some of the newer non-cheapo Dell machines.

(Disclaimer, I do not dislike, nor am I bashing Dell)

I certainly appreciate your perspective on this, and I do not doubt your experience. And yet like any story their are two sides. I have a close friend of 20 years that is the CEO of one of the nations largest health care organizations. They used Dells for business for five of the last six years when due to similar problems of disorganization and cost cutting, their service began to slide and leave the hospitals in an unacceptable position. So they dropped Dell in favor of HP. So, my point here is not that HP is better than Dell, or anyone else for that matter. My point is simply that it seems like currently Dell has lost their way, as I have had many friends, associates, and fellow CEO's that have had major issues with Dell. I knew that when I was about to place my order for a Ubuntu Linux powered Dell Netbook Mini 9. And yet it was this final article that was the final word and deal breaker for me.

Finally after deploying over 200+ ThinkPad T series machines for over 8 years in my company, with no problems of any consequence that were not easily resolved, I choose to use a ThinkPad as my primary personal & business laptop.
Cheers
