It looks like...ThinkPhone?

#1 Post by beGi » Fri Dec 12, 2008 12:12 pm

Hmm, it looks like Lenovo is going into phone business... I guess they have new strategy, it seems that 78% profit drop makes wonders, or maybe cheaper notebooks that contain cheaper components... Time will tell...

They (Lenovo) have had a couple of interesting devices of this nature in the past, but I've never seen one in the U.S....

Nice looking toy...just like the newer ThinkPads...

it would be nice if they made something durable, black, ugly and with a trackpoint. and it is not a joke, im tired of those flashy/shiny phones with plastic buttons painted silver.

Don't get me started. I've been selling phones for five years now and the trend towards stylish, touchscreen, available in 6 color, trendy phones makes me sick.

I've owned the G1 for over two months now and while it is an awesome device, Android is not ready to compete with Windows Mobile and Symbian yet. With some polishing it could easily dominate, and the Chrome Lite browser puts any phone browser to shame.

The open source platform is a huge plus and will push the OS forward faster than any others.

I should stop there... :D

here is my dream phone:
1. black, the kind of black that you find on a classic thinkpad, not shiny but just regular rugged feeling
2. a trackpoint, maybe smaller than in a regular notebook but with the same basic design of a thinkpad
3. not completely flat like an iphone, i want something that i can hold on with with one arm and use both of my hands for driving
4. gps
5. high resolution screen not just big screen but high resolution screen
6. palm OS
7. sd card reader is a must
8. waterproof/ shockproof/ dustproof

This is becoming illegal in an increasing number of states. Try a headset.

I'm intrigued by this. What draws you to Palm? Palm, to me, lacks the power of Windows or Symbian in terms of versatility and customization. Customization is something that Android has going for it. There's not a lot on my G1 that can't be tweaked.

palm OS = equals simplicity, something that is important on a phone. but i might be just minimalist.

I've bought a Nokia N95 8GB and I'm totally second-guessing myself on it a thousand times.

First it was the N82. I decided I'm happy with the N95. Then it was the G1, which I could have got off-contract for the same price as the Nokia, and I have no doubt at all that the Android platform will develop ridiculously quickly. Also, a keyboard would be nice. But I think I'd miss the N95's great camera.

At the current moment it's the Nokia E71. That is a very nice phone. Hardware-wise, in terms of camera (which I use pretty frequently) and form-factor (like keyboard), I think the E71 trumps the G1.

But the G1's always got that software factor, and it's only a matter of time before Android software becomes totally crazy-cool and cheap as heck Android phones start coming out and doing great stuff. If I had to do it again I'd probably still buy the N95 (or maybe an E71, I'm really liking that phone), but my next phone will probably be an Android phone.

I have been a die-hard Symbian fan for years now, because I think it has a simple, but powerful interface. I own an E61i and just got rid of an N81, and the thing that keeps bringing me back to the G1 is the web browsing. The email client is decent, but I still prefer the Symbian or Windows Mobile clients. I would still like to pick up an E71 myself to see how it stacks up to the E61i, but I have a feeling the web browsing will still be far behind the functionality of Chrome.

I had a guy come in to my store today with an SE P1i, which seemed pretty slick. I haven't used a UIQ device since the P910, so I'll probably end up adding that to my never-ending list of phones I want.

Matt- The Palm OS is a poster child for simplicity, which is its downfall in my book. No task manager, difficult computer integration, lacking a lot of features other comparably priced PDAs have... All these add up to a recipe for disaster. I must admit, they keep releasing new Palm devices. And the Centro caught on better than I expected

I want a phone that sounds and feels (on my ear) like an old Bell.

The handset had a great weight and felt great on your ear. I hate the new phones sound quality and the features they try to shove down your throat. When did voice quality become irrelevant? Why do I have to hold the phone up to my ear? Isn't that a step backward? In the 70s and 80s I didn't have to hold the phone, it just rested on my shoulder and it felt very comfortable

FWIW I use a razr, I don't have text or web or anything else. I use motorola because I can HEAR the voice on the other end of the line and when I drop it, it still works after I put it back together. I don't need my phone to be another computer. I already carry 2 of those.

This would make a great Cell phone form factor, and with today's battery technology you could talk for a week without a recharge.

You might be interested in this. I saw them on clearance at Micro Center--would have picked one up, but I didn't think an ironic Bluetooth headset was worth $20.

Having now played with a G1, I can say that I don't regret the N95 over the G1. The keyboard just wasn't that good, I felt, though perhaps it had something to do with the phone being attached to one of those security devices at a T-Mobile store.

The keyboard does take some getting used to. I will never succumb to the notion that a QWERTY keypad is "better for texting" because I could go twice as fast on my N95 or most other 10 key layouts than I can with a full keypad. The only time a full keypad works better is with web addresses, because there are so many irregular words. My ideal phone would have both keypads 8) (I know, there are phones out there that have both. None have struck my fancy though)

both seem more practical than an iphone.
it would be nice to equip my 98 honda accord with one of those.
and when driving while holding the phone the officer could never tell me to use a head set.

I'm with you on this. I love my G1 too, but like you said, it's not quite "there" yet. Give the Android platform a little more time to evolve and I think it'll deliver.

However, Palm, with their new "Pre" looks VERY promising. I'm very anxious to see a demo in the store. Granted, it won't be available in GSM for awhile (BOO!)

Correct. C++ is the basis for Symbian apps, but Nokia offers a Python interface for developers on their website as well.
