Newbie networking question

#1 Post by nut cracker » Thu Jan 01, 2009 9:40 pm

Hi,

I've purchased a router to share files and Internet connection between my desktop (wired) and laptop (wireless). Everything's fine so far, but while I'm able to detect my dekstop from my laptop, it doesn't work vice versa. They're both in the same workgroup. How do I fix this?

Thanks!

Usually you will not see you laptop if there is nothing shared on it. If you will create at least one shared folder, you should be able to find it in your workgroup.

If you are running XP, you may need to run the network wizard first in order for it to work. It has to go enable file sharing and the such and make the computer discoverable on the network. Vista does this quite nicely through the Network and sharing center, but XP is a bit of pain to get it to work. Once you got it working, it will be fine.

Networking is a pain, when I cannot connect to one source from only one way I usually try typing in a direct networking address eg: //workgroup/laptop (it's been a while so I am not sure if this is correct)

Networking is not fun IMO it's always been a pain for me. I would test it now but I use Linux these days

Wizard you say?

Humbug!

Enable sharing via right clicking on a folder and select sharing and security. From there you can configure permissions, share names and so on. Also hop into Explorer-->Tools-->View and turn off simple sharing.
