What other laptops have an IPS screen

#1 Post by toddreg » Wed Jan 28, 2009 10:23 am

I have been keeping an eye out for a T60p with the IPS 15" screen that I can afford but haven't located one yet. The screen is the driving force and it just hit me that there must be other manufacturers that used the IPS screens as well. Any idea what manufacturers and models I might have a look at?

Thanks

None, unless you're looking for a tablet.

Yes, but that was discontinued as well (probably even earlier than the T60).
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

Unfortunately, Asus turned out not to care about the image quality either - the only model they had was V6Va which was a 15" SXGA+ which came with IPS, but only in the first few batches, after this they returned to TN.
It wasn't cheap either, at $2000.

It is a T4/p era machine, with Pentium M Sonoma and x700 ATI mobility radeon.

AFAIK, the last one to come with IPS are the last batch T60p which used NOS N150U3-L01 LCDs. AFFS is where it's at, but yeah, you only see these in Tablets.
Maybe you could contact Hydis directly, they do produce a 13.3", 12.1" wide AFFS LCDs today it seems :) Maybe someone uses them for other purposes than tablets

Honestly, with prices for IPS-equipped ThinkPads being as low as they are, I can't see why you'd be looking at an Asus...

We'd all like to score a late-model T60p with an IPS LCD for $250, but that's not going to happen unless you're buying it from someone who needs a fix...

And these machines are not going to take much more of a further price drop because they simply work way too well for most people's needs...

$300 will buy you a R50p, or an average T42 with IPS. R51 units go for even less.

Between $300 and $600 you'll find a plethora of T42/p and T43/p machines, as well as some T60s...

Expect to pay $700+ for a decent T60p...that's exactly half of what I was selling them for a year ago...

My $0.02 only...

So, theoretically, a X30x with an IPS screen is possible ...

Yes, if the interface in use is the same (I-PEX 40 pin)
.. and of course, if one is willing to downgrade to a 1280x800 resolution :)

I guess the second problem will be the harder one for most of this forum members :D

Hehe.. exactly :D

Hmm, how on earth did it get this late so fast?

Just saw this BTW while on this subject: http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/28/lapt ... 1#comments

Just a bad move they decided to test the 15" SXGA+... the UXGA/QXGA would have been brighter, and would not have too much saturation in reds.. but the outcome was:

Ordering the displays with an emphasis on colour accuracy, the list looks like this:
1. Lenovo ThinkPad W700
2. IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60
3. Dell Inspiron Mini 9
4. Apple late-2008 MacBook Pro 15 inch

Ordering the displays with an emphasis on viewing angle flexibility, the list becomes:
1. IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60
2. Lenovo ThinkPad W700
3. Apple late-2008 MacBook Pro 15 inch
4. Dell Inspiron Mini 9

From the comments, people think it is "too bad" that Apple performs so badly being "Pro" and all... Maybe this bad press would fire up the production of new AFFS or IPS sizes.
And then there are of course the people who adore their "X-black" shiny useless-gamut 6-bit "proprietary ****" Vaio LCDs in the comments of course... sigh.

Another thing to be considered is the fact that the Hydis UXGA screen offered on T60p was the only one ever to have the contrast rated at 500:1 as opposed to 400:1 on all other FlexViews...that would've been even more of a kick in the [censored] for any laptop competing in picture quality...

It's beyond me why Lenovo hasn't revived IPS/AFFS for the W700...powerful and expensive machine like that should not be crippled by a sub-standard TN panel, whether it has two or eleven backlights...that's the only reason I don't see myself buying one of these monsters...

Why did Lenovo stop using IPS screens?
Frankenpad X31.5 (X31 casing, X32 motherboard) 1.8ghz Pentium M processor, 1gb RAM,
60gb HDD dual booting Arch GNU/Linux && Windows XP

Supposedly, there are two reasons: Lenovo was not able to find a sustained supply source for IPS panels that could come up to their quality requirements (or something of the sort) and secondly, they are too expensive to build in and maintain while the demand for such laptops (including 4:3 aspect ratio) has decreased in the mean time in favor to widescreens... I believe that´s the story more or less :)

Official explanation was "unreliable supplier" if I remember correctly, meaning Boe-Hydis...since ID Tech and LG Phillips were pretty much out of the picture at the time...

Bear in mind though that both X60 and X61 tablets use the IPS-derived AFFS panels from the very same "unrealiable" supplier... :?:

As does X200 tablet...

Not to offend some people who I have a lot of respect for that are employed by Lenovo, but I see it as a classic case of corporate cost-cutting combined with BS excuses...

Well, IDtech closed down in the end of 2005, with their LCD factory in Japan closing earlier (sold to Sony). Production of the current panels already took place in the Philippines, except for the QXGA panel, which joined the Phillipines production line early in 2005.

BOE-Hydis had a very bad time in 2006, were it became hard to compete due to lack of maintenance. Someone accused the Chinese BOE group for not maintaining or upgrading their plants in Korea, and for just joining the joint-venture to learn more about the AFFS technology (http://myafrica.wordpress.com/2006/09/1 ... rom-korea/ , http://esechrist.blogspot.com/2006/11/n ... 6-lcd.html ), so BOE could just produce this in China instead.
So, BOE-Hydis filed bankruptcy in late 2006. They began restructuring in 2007, outside the BOE group to form "Hydis", which is now under PVI.

So yes, unreliable supplier is completely correct. I tend to agree with Lenovo - one supplier for the LCD is just not enough in this case, no matter what company this was.

Today, yes, as long as it is not 4:3, it is possible - and it seems that PVI lets them focus on AFFS, hence the introduction of 12.1" 13.3" and 8.9" WXGA LCDs. Lenovo just has to carry one AFFS LCD, not 4:3 12.1" XGA, SXGA and 15" SXGA+, UXGA and QXGA which had long delivery times. If you order 4:3 panels by Samsung, your order will have a pretty low priority unless you pay them more.

When one could submit the last order by Idtech before closing, the delivery time was approx a horrible three months - stated on the webpage, when it was available.
