How to split 6gb installation on two dvd?

#1 Post by beGi » Fri Feb 20, 2009 7:57 am

So my friend borrowed me 6 GB DVD disc, and I would like to split installation on two single layer DVD's...

Why don't i buy DL DVD disc? Because stores where I am currently never heard for such thing  :help: ...

Why don't I split it using archiver app, and merge the image and install using virtual drive? Because I want more elegant solution (if possible)...

To be more specific, I want to split installation on two DVD's, then when I start installation with disc 1, I want installation process to ask me for disc 2 when disc 1 finishes copying...

Is there an app (or workaround) that can do such thing?

Any advice is appreciated...

Thanks...

How about using Winrar, Winzip, 7Zip or whatever to zip the DL-file, selecting e.g. a 4GB output filesize, so you would get 2 output files? You could then burn those onto two single layer DVDs.
When you then want to install it, unzip the DVDs to your hard disk and install from there

RBS, that´s exactly what won´t work for us, because we are actually looking for a program that would be able to "split" the installer. The archiving programs would just divide the file into 2 pieces, neither of which is "active" or installable.

I don't see why that would NOT work, you unzip to HD, and then install from HD.
The DVD is just for storage.

You could also do a bit of homework, and try to open the program on the DL-DVD with winrar, then unpack the whole lot onto a HD. You may find the install-file (an inf or xml or whatever), and make a change in there to call for the second HD.

Unfortunately, this won´t work for the case when you need to boot from the DL-DVD, but otherwise I agree to you. BTW, I have been always doing something similar to that. When I need to use some software CD/DVD, I always create and .iso image of it and store it on an external HD. This has some advantages, but it doesn´t work for media one needs to boot from. I´m yet to find a way to "boot" from different source without having to format everything (like external HD, USB, virtual drive).

allthough it is rather barbaric in the method, one way I have done it is by splitting the files (if they are not packaged)

if you copy whole folders in alphabetical order then the disc will error out, at the point you stick the second disc in and click retry. if it errors out again put disc 1 back in. just copy the same disc to two folders and delete the second half of the install files from the 1st disc and the first half from the second disc (ensures installer stays in tact).

Installers these days dont work like they used to though :(

Just make sure you split the folder up alphabetically, this should in theory prevent you from having to switch back and forth. folders that begin with a-l in disc 1 and from m to z in the other disc as an example.

That would be definitely something to try out! Thanks a bunch for the good idea :)
