Oh, you found that out the hard way :D There is a lot that can be said about updates, I´ll say only that the latest is not always the best. For me I found over time the versions of Lenovo software/drivers that are rock-solid and optimal on my system and I stick to them. Interestingly, they are flawless even under Win 7 beta (I used to have Vista).

I never do automatic update...

From time to time i browse through lenovo driver site, search for updated driver versions, and i update them ONLY if changelog shows "something interesting" (browsing changelog is a must IMO)...

Never had driver problems that were downloaded from lenovo...

I fail to understand the obsession that some people (and I'm not referring to OP) have with updates...

Security issues, fine. Everything else should be left alone if it works well IMO...

Very well said, I agree completely.
.
Over the test of time I've found that newer does not always equal better. Updates can cause far more problems than they fix, and choosing to update without reviewing the change log is very risky.
.
At the end of the day if your system runs well, celebrate and leave it alone.

Cheers...

I'm still using Ubuntu 8.04 for a deadly fear that something will break if I upgrade. 9.04 should be coming out soon, and maybe it will be worth a look, but then again maybe not.

I don't even have Windows Automatic Update turned on. I wait for the notification and then I go investigate the update first before allowing it to install. That saved me from an awful problem last year with an MS conflict with ZoneAlarm.

Security updates on Windows only, however on my Fedora box I install Updates-Testing(To test some of my patches I add :D ) Though from a developer side I guess that makes sense haha.
