IBM ThinkPad 560X UltraBase.

#1 Post by ThinkPad560X » Fri Mar 13, 2009 3:17 am

I own a IBM ThinkPad 560X and looking for a UltraBase like what the X40 Series has. A base where it conncects to the bottom of the laptop and has a CD Drive and USB ports and other ports.
All I can find on ebay is UltraBases for the followings: 570,X20 Series, X30 Series, X40 Series, X60 Series. Will any of these work?

I don't think the 560x has an Ultrabase type dock. For docking, I beleive your choices are one of the (2) below and an external CDRW drive;

Does anyone know if the ThinkPad 570 Ultrabase will work on my 560X?
A guy on ebay said only the 560X, 560Z would work on it but not the 560 or 560E.
I don't know if it would or not as I can't find any good pictures of just a 570 Ultrabase.
In my EasySetup on the ThinkPad it has a fadded CD-ROM Drive icon and also DVD Drive icon
I know a CD-ROM Drive works and I guess theres a DVD Drive for it too. Is that for a Ultrabase or a USB?
And would a USB CD-ROM Drive read in the bios?

Is there a such thing as a USB Ultrabase? where I can plug the base in via USB and it connects to the bottom of the laptop and has a Modem/Ethernet port, 3-4 USB ports and a CD-ROM Drive bay.

Not that I'm aware of but there is a ThinkPad USB port replicator with digital video. It has everything you want except the optical drive bay which you could attach via USB. However my concern would be if USB 1.1, which is all the 560 supports IIRC, is fast enough for this application. See the blog comments about speed concerns even with USB 2.

Yeah that should work. I use USB 2.0 on it anyway. Flash Drives, Printers, External hard Drives, ect. It works okay. Just get a icon on the bottom that says "You can make this device run faster by pluging into a USB 2.0 HUB. My IBM NetVista M41 has 1.0 USB on it for some reason to. and it has a Pentium 4 Windows XP Home COA on it. You think IBM would of made it a 2.0 USB HUBs for as new as it is, witch I plan to buy a 4 port PCI USB HUB for it.

Nope, it won't work. I tried it, and it doesn't.
