Unicomp in financial trouble?

#1 Post by threedaysrest » Sat Mar 14, 2009 7:26 am

Let's hope not, for they are one of the last resources for what remains of the Model M. However, the Model M Wikipedia article has a blurb about Unicomp's product not being profitable

More, Jim Owens' voice mail has reportedly indicated he's away from Unicomp and doesn't know when he'll return.

There's a recent NPR feature about Unicomp and the Model M. It's a great read.

There's also a two-part Denver Technology Examiner series about the Model M and Unicomp:

Part 1

Follow-up (with pictures of Unicomp's offerings).

If you've not tried a Unicomp Model M, do so. Spread the word!

That is really bad news indeed.
I have thought alot about buying their Endurapro because it is supposed to be a really good keyboard, and white/gray keys on a black frame is a big plus in my book - you can actually see the keys in less than stellar light conditions, and the frame won't fade or anything. The price is a bit steep, since i could live without the "trackpoint" - also i can't get it with USB outside the US which i really would prefer, and even if i could, those couldn't be re-programmed. :(

Worst thing I ever did, was selling my Northgate Omnikey 116 keyboard.
When I did, it was already about 16 years old, and all keys still worked, but it was showing its age.
Nowadays these are worth between $200 and $400!
You can still buy them in the form of the Avant Prime with 12 F-keys or Avant Stellar with 24 F-keys (12 along the top and 12 on the left).
The original Northgates were the real Rolls-Royces amongst keyboards, IMHO way better than the IBM Model M.

RBS,

The Northgates are wonderful keyboards, but better than a Model M?! :o I'll point to the Model M manufactured from 1987-1992 for their wonderful key travel and just-right degree of firmness. I like my Northgate, wherever I've stored it, but my 1988 Model M will have to be pried from my cold, dead hands.

I could never get friendly with the awful 'clicking' noise of the IBM keyboards.
The Northgate did not have this irritating 'click', so maybe I am biased against those M's.
