Odd choice for a home

#1 Post by AlphaKilo470 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 12:41 am

I left my Bic cigarette lighter on the back patio for a couple of hours the other day and right before I used it to light a smoke, I noticed a small inchworm had built a nest inside of it. I decided to leave the critter alone; watching the thing live in my lighter is more amusing than lighting up my Marlboro anyways... As soon as I find my digital camera, I'll take some pictures of it.

Never having seen, or even heard of, an inchworm it would be great to see a picture.

The first thing the mention brought to mind were the words of Danny Kaye's song in the old children's classic, Hans Christian Anderson:

But what they really look like is this, though much smaller when not photographed so closely. I haven't seen one outdoors in years:

Having looked up "Inchworm" on the web, it appears that it is the caterpillar of the Geometer moth. Link here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geometer_moth

Apparently there are 300 species in the British Isles. Amazing. I have no recollection of the word, however I have seen caterpillars that move like that.

@AlphaKilo470: Thank you for putting a name to the creepy-crawly. I hope you have been able to find an alternative to your lighter and are enjoying your fag. (Before anyone objects to the use of that word, it is common UK slang for a cigarette.)

@Mike Blake: Thank you for the photo. Yes, I have seen them but had no word for them except caterpillar. We live and learn. :)
