8.875% sales tax in NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 Post by IBMlenovo123 » Sat May 02, 2009 12:09 pm

Where I am, currently sales tax is 8.375%. And today they annouce it may get rise to 8.875%.

I don't know if New York City is the highest in the nation, but even Californis is like 8.00% right?

I am search alternative shopping channels. Right now I pay no tax if I order from Newegg.com, even Amazon.com or Buy.com charges tax!!! It's like no way to hide.

:| , i feel bit better now.

Dream on... statewide it's 8.25% but tack on local rates for various reasons/projects and you get...

http://www.boe.ca.gov/cgi-bin/rates.cgi ... IST=COUNTY
http://www.boe.ca.gov/sutax/pam71.htm

9.25% for us here in Santa Clara County. Pico Rivera and Southgate in Los Angeles County are currently at 10.25% (exact reasons are unknown to me other than the local voters approved the increase).

Chicago is 10.25%, as I recall.

Here in Ontario (Canada) we're at 13% -- 5% federal GST plus 8% provincial sales tax. And that still looks low by European standards!

Here in Israel we sit somewhere in the middle between North America and Europe, at 15.5% VAT (was as high as 18% at some point).

However, there are special taxes on certain items, making them far more expensive. For example, alcoholic beverages and cigarettes, and, get this, a 100% tax on automobiles! That's right, a car costs more than double here than it does in the US. No wonder over 60% of the private vehicles are actually leased.

I know this has been true in Honduras, Central America as well. Autos are considered luxuries and have a 100% tax. Pickup trucks for farm use do get a break, although you need to own a farm or ranch to get this break. Other luxury items are taxed similarly. I bought a new JVC AM/FM/Shortwave Radio/Cassette player some years ago for about $200 in the US. Saw the identical item at a mall in Honduras a couple months later for about 900 Lps. At the time, 2 Lps was worth 1 US dollar.

We rented a mini van for a family outing this past weekend, and I was shocked to learned that sales tax was 21%on short term (less than 30 days) auto rentals! That's literally highway robbery!

I remember when our MN sales tax rate went to 6.5% in the 90s, I think it was one of the highest in the nation. I guess you all are catching on. I think it's still 6.5%, though a few special districts can charge more. Our gov's been holding the line on tax increases for last seven years.

D.C. tax on food bought in all restaurants is 10%! So if you eat out in D.C., be prepared to add from 25-30% to your bill (10% tax plus 15-20% tip, most restaurants automatically add 18-20% tip on parties 6 or larger!)

Even McDonald's adds the 10%.

This was implemented several years ago.

interesting thread..
tax rates in various locations world wide..

SO, the question that "pops" into my mind is how does the tax rate compare to the type of government..
i.e. sweden, we all know, is a very liberal/progressive type of government..
while were i once lived in florida, the overall tax burden was about 7.4%..
florida was and still might be a conservative state..

now NY State, OTH, is a very liberal state, the tax burden is 11.7%..

sweden 25% VAT..!
i think that georgia at 9.9% is just fine.. no old castles but no 25% VAT..

http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxdata/show/335.html

is there something to be learned here..?

Navajo Nation: 4%
Arizona: 5.6%
New Mexico: does not have a sales tax; it's called a gross receipts tax. The combined gross receipts tax rate varies throughout the state from 5.125 percent to 8 percent. The total rate is a combination of all rates imposed by the state, counties, and municipalities.

These three areas affect me as I live in the four corners area and am from the Navajo Reservation. New Mex is an hour away and is the nearest big box store town. I didn't know about the gross receipts tax in New Mexico! There is no tax imposed on select food items also.

As of next week, South Gate and Pico Rivera will collect 10.75% sales tax.

Oh, and for those thinking they can skirt sales tax by out-of-state purchases, think again.

Between Ebay forcing all-electronic-payments and the good folks in Sacramento, you'll see the state doing automated audits for "use tax" soon enough.

In SoCal, we already receive unsolicited tax bills in the mid 4-figures from the *city* of Los Angeles, and 3-figure bills from other munis who do simple data mining to send you the dunning for your "home business", then threaten to send you to collections if you don't disprove their claim.

Alrite, I put another spin on this topic:

NYC 8.375%
Jersey 7%
Maryland 6%
Jersey UEZ 3.5%
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Ente ... rise_zones

typical a gallon of gas in
NY: $2.89
NJ: $2.49

I fill up my 20 gallon gas, differnce is $8 a shot.

I cross the state border NY/NJ (only about 3 miles) shopping sometimes just to avert the tax.

For example:
I spend $1000 on Ikea in NY, tax is $83.75
I spend $1000 on Ikea in NJ UEZ, tax is $35.00

Anyone else care to do this kind of thing?

In Vancouver, (Washington) they are about 5 miles north of Portland, OR where there is no sales tax at all. Portland gets a ton of sales from south Washington residents who travel there for larger purchases.

On the flip side, Oregon residents often show their license in my store and request tax exemption, which I happily deny them. THAT, however, is a whole other discussion.
